India’s newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill opened up about removing veteran batsman Rohit Sharma from the captaincy for the three-match ODI series against Australia. Gill revealed that he was informed about his appointment even before the official announcement, which came after the first Test against the West Indies.

Gill is currently leading the national cricket team in the two-match Test series against the West Indies. The Men in Blue won by an innings and 140 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill’s team will play the last test from Friday, October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Shubman Gill becomes ODI captain in place of Rohit Sharma

The 26-year-old, who has already showcased his leadership skills with Gujarat Titans in the IPL, now faces his first big challenge in the 50-over format.

Gill was promoted to ODI captain after a successful stint as Test captain, where he led India to a 2–2 draw in England. Their aim will be to blend youth with experience and lay the foundation for the 2027 ODI World Cup campaign. The Men in Blue last won the ODI World Cup in 2011 under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

I came to know about it a little earlier – Shubhman Gill

During his first press conference after being appointed as India’s new ODI captain, Shubman Gill expressed his pride in leading the national team. He revealed that although the announcement was made after the first Test against the West Indies, he was informed about his appointment well in advance.

“It was announced after the first Test against West Indies but I got to know about it a little earlier. It’s an honor to lead India,” Gill told reporters in Delhi on Thursday.

Gill admitted that living up to his own expectations is a challenge, but said he wanted to represent India in all formats and help the team win major ICC titles.

Gill said, “It becomes a challenge to live up to my expectations. I want to play in all formats, win ICC trophies.”

Why was Rohit changed as ODI captain?

The men’s selection committee took a bold step by removing Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain despite his stellar record in ICC events and bilateral series. India played aggressive cricket under the leadership of Rohit and achieved an unbeaten victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy. The team also reached the 2023 World Cup final.

Gautam Gambhir’s team management and BCCI’s long-term vision aims to give Shubman Gill enough time to build the team ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Rohit will be 40 by then, sparking talk of a possible retirement phase for him.

However, Gill dismissed such rumors and said that Rohit and Virat Kohli will remain an integral part of India’s plans. The team will blend young leadership with seasoned experience for the next World Cup cycle.
