Former head coach Gary Kirsten, who directed India to the 2011 World Cup title, shared his views on Shubman Gill’s captaincy during the five -match Test series against England. Kirsten said that the 25 -year -old has a “great ability” to become one of the finest leaders of India in the format.

Shubman Gill took over as India’s Test captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Gill has given impressive batting performance in the series against England. However, his leadership has seen mixed results. India is currently 1-2 behind the series, with defeat in the first and third Test matches.

Gary Kirsten said Shubman Gill is a great thinker and a good player. Kirsten feels that he has the ability to become a top test captain for India.

“Okay, this is the early day. I think he has received a lot of possibilities. Captaining is a completely a lot of things you have been kept together,” Kirsten said in an interview with Redifff.

He said, “He is a great thinker in the game. He himself is a good player. But there is a whole group of things you have got to be right. And I think the man management is going to play like any leader,” he said.

Shubman Gill is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing test series between India and England. He has scored 607 runs in six innings at an average of 101.16, including three centuries. Rishabh Pant has scored 425 runs in six innings at an average of 70.83.

MS Dhoni was an incredible man – Gary Kirsten

Kirsten, who worked with MS Dhoni, described the former captain as an incredible man-manager. He said that Shubman Gill should follow Dhoni, given that it will increase his captaincy.

“Dhoni was an incredible man-manager. If he can actually remove that component of his leadership, I think he has all the credentials to become a great captain for India,” Kirsten said.

Kirsten and Dhoni directed India to win the 2011 ODI World Cup. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India won three major ICC tournaments – 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Dhoni also inspired India to win two Asia Cups in 2010 and 2016.

Gary Kirsten said that he is unfamiliar with the point of view of Gautam Gambhir as a coach. Kirsten described serious, strong, and serious, stronger, and someone with a different personality and style.
