ICC T20 World Cup-winning Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed that he approached former World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni for advice before the start of the T20 World Cup and it was his invaluable advice that helped him lead his team with confidence and determination.
India are currently on top in the world after winning consecutive ICC T20 World Cup trophies in 2024 and 2026. The win not only reflects India’s stellar performance in the shortest format of the game but also makes them the most recent unbeaten power in ICC tournaments since the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
India defeated New Zealand by a huge margin of 96 runs in the final of ICC T20 World Cup 2026 and cemented their place among the top captains of the country to win the World Cup. India are also now the most successful team in the T20 World Cup with three titles.
Suryakumar Yadav reveals MS Dhoni’s invaluable advice ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
Title-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav for India revealed that he had turned to former Indian skipper MS Dhoni for advice ahead of the start of the 2026 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup.
“I met him (MS Dhoni) before the tournament and he told me how to approach ICC tournaments. He told me that we have a good team, we just have to be courageous and we will definitely win. His reaction after the win was amazing,” the captain said.
MS Dhoni was the first Indian captain to win the ICC T20 World Cup in the inaugural season in 2007. He is often hailed as the greatest white-ball captain of all time, and Surya seems to have learned it from the institute himself.

Suryakumar Yadav has included himself in the list of great Indian captains to win the World Cup. Suryakumar Yadav won the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, while MS Dhoni led India to two World Cup wins in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI). The other two captains in the list include Kapil Dev (1983) and Rohit Sharma (2024).
“It feels good to be associated with that elite company. I am slowly realizing it. It is a very special feeling to talk amongst such great people. I will try to do the same in the future and help India win more trophies,” Suryakumar told PTI in a video.

SKY also reflected on their successful campaign, “It feels good to win 24 and 26 in a row. It’s a very special feeling. When we won in 2024, we thought it would be very special to do it again at home in 2026.”
The Indian T20I team will have its sights set on the 2028 Olympics, which will host cricket as a participating sport in the shortest format of the game for the first time. Suryakumar Yadav also indicated that he is not considering retirement any time soon.
