Rahul Dravid ended his term as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season on Saturday, 30 August. The exit of the former India captain led to many franchisees, in which Kolkata Knight Riders discovered the possibility of alleged signing.
Dravid took charge as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals after helping India win the 2024 T20 World Cup. He managed his responsibilities despite recovering from a knee injury. Royals launched a disappointing campaign in IPL 2025, finishing ninth in the points table with just four wins from 14 league stage matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders are currently without head coach after Chandrakant Pandit’s resignation last month. According to a report by Telegraph, Rahul is considering Dravid for the franchise situation.

The report also mentions that KKR CEO, Venky Mysore, is in the West Indies for the Caribbean Premier League, and the discussion about Dravid may begin once returning to Mumbai. However, it is uncertain whether Dravid is ready to play a new coaching role at this stage.

The report further states that Knight Riders are interested in achieving Rahul Dravid on a multi-year coaching deal. However, former India captain and T20 World Cup winning coaches want to take some time before doing a new role.
KKR’s previous coach, Chandrakant Pandit, joined the franchise after the 2022 season. The Kolkata team launched a disappointing campaign in 2023, with seventh place. However, Pandit directed KKR to his third IPL title in 2024 under Captain Shres Iyer.
Next to the 2025 season, KKR participated in a manner with Iyer and appointed Ajinkya Rahane as captain. The team struggled and finished the season in eighth place. He won five of his 14 matches and missed the playoffs. The franchise is now looking for a fresh coaching setup for the next version.

Rahul Dravid participated in coaching of the Indian team to focus on the family, but he accepted the head coach role of Rajasthan Royals due to his bond with franchise owners, especially Manoj Badle,.
Dravid played an important role in developing young talent during his time with Royals. However, his second term with the franchise ended after just one season, as he refused to take a high position within the setup.
Dravid first joined the Royals as a player in 2011, captaining the team in 2012 and 2013, and later served as the team director and mentor in 2014 and 2015. He scored 1,276 runs in 46 matches in 46 matches for Rajasthan Royals and a strike rate of 110.86, including seven half-centers.
