Not MS Dhoni or Rishabh Pant! Rohit Sharma declared India’s best wicketkeeper; R Ashwin also agrees

Veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma has heaped praise on former wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, which has left fans of the great MS Dhoni fuming. Rohit Sharma made it clear that Wriddhiman Saha is head and shoulders above all when it comes to pure wicketkeeping skills.

The former Indian captain has described Saha as India’s best wicketkeeper and one of the most underrated players the country has ever produced. Rohit told that wicketkeeping in India, especially in Test cricket, is very difficult.

Rohit Sharma called Wriddhiman Saha the best wicketkeeper of India till date

On Indian pitches the ball often turns fast, stays low and does unexpected things. In such a situation a wicketkeeper has very little time to react. And Rohit Sharma believes that Saha handled these challenges better than anyone else, including one of the greatest wicketkeepers of all time, MS Dhoni.

The batting icon has revealed that wicketkeeping was never easy for bowlers like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Jadeja bowls at good pace, while Ashwin has countless variations, including the carrom ball, but Saha took catches that looked almost impossible.

In the viral video, Rohit Sharma said, “We have never seen such a keeper in India. The best keeper in India. There is no doubt about it. You must have seen it when we were playing Test matches. In India, the ball rotates a lot. It remains low.”

Keeping the ball in the same position. It’s hard to keep the ball in focus. Jadeja bowls fast. Ashwin is very skilled. He bowls from the top. He throws carrom ball. He doesn’t even know which ball he is throwing. Saha has caught that ball. So, right? (laughing).”

Wriddhiman Saha was such a good keeper: Ravichandran Ashwin

Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin reacted to Rohit Sharma’s comments as the former Indian off-spinner added a touch of humor before completely agreeing with the former captain’s assessment. Ashwin also praised Saha’s exceptional skills behind the stumps.

Sharing the clip of the ex, Ravichandran Ashwin posted, ” Rohit is Rohit! To this day I don’t even know how I bowled the ball. All joking aside! What a keeper Saha was .”

How Wriddhiman Saha and MS Dhoni defined 2 eras of Indian wicketkeeping

Saha’s record in Test cricket reflects his quality. In 40 Test matches, he was involved in 104 dismissals, including 92 catches and 12 stumpings. With the bat, he scored 1,353 runs scoring three centuries and six half-centuries. However, Saha got a chance to play only nine ODI matches for India.

Dhoni, on the other hand, has 294 dismissals in 90 Test matches, which include 256 catches and 38 stumpings. The former Indian captain scored 4876 runs in Tests with 6 centuries and 33 fifties.

Well, Dhoni and Saha represent two very different styles and eras of wicketkeeping in Indian cricket. Dhoni changed the role of wicketkeeper in all formats. His lightning-quick stumpings, sharp match awareness and calm leadership made him a game-changer.

He not only kept wickets but also guided the bowlers and controlled the game under pressure. Saha, on the other hand, shone with traditional and technically sound wicketkeeping. His footwork, low catching and ability to stand close to the stumps even against fast bowlers was excellent.
