Michael Clarke gave credit to the former captain of India: Team India reached the final of T20 World Cup 2026 after defeating England in a close match. After scoring a mammoth score of 256, the Suryakumar Yadav-led brigade managed to win the contest by a margin of just 7 runs, which shows the level of competition.
In key points of the match, from Sanju Samson’s innings of 89 to some fine efforts with the ball, India made the difference and ultimately won the match to seal a place in the final for the second consecutive campaign in the T20 World Cup. Former Australia captain Michael Clarke said some brilliant moves in fielding also helped the Men in Blue win the high-octane contest.
How did Virat Kohli help India defeat England? Michael Clarke explained
Akshar Patel took a brilliant running catch to dismiss England captain Harry Brook. Patel was also involved in dismissing Will Jacques at crucial moments of the game. Clarke said that it is Virat Kohli who inspires the team the most to improve the level of their fitness and fielding.
Michael Clarke said, “The other thing that was defining and the difference between India winning and England not winning was the fielding. Some of the players from India made certain shoutouts. They probably haven’t got enough credit for their fielding over the last few years.”
“I think Virat Kohli played a big role when he focused a lot on fitness and he also made changes to the Indian fielding. Those two catches were match-winners,” Michael Clarke said on ‘Beyond23 Cricket Podcast’.
While the Indian national cricket team made some great efforts defending the total, England missed several chances in the first innings. When Sanju Samson was batting on 15, Brook dropped a sitter inside the circle. Missed chances ultimately cost them the match.
Michael Clarke expects 50-50 match in T20 World Cup 2026 final
Despite India’s dominant win, Clarke feels New Zealand will have to overcome a very tough opponent in the final match to be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8. Since the Kiwis easily defeated undefeated South Africa in the semi-finals, Clarke believes the last leg of the title race will end through a 50-50 contest.
“Before the semi-final against South Africa, if you say New Zealand is going to the final against India, I think it is clear that India are far and away favourites. Now after watching this game, New Zealand beat South Africa, I think it is 50-50. But I am going with India to beat New Zealand”, the former cricketer further said.
Clarke predicts the winner of T20 World Cup 2026 final
Yadav and his boys are on the verge of creating history in the T20 World Cup. If they are successful in defeating New Zealand, they can become the first team to defend the title for the first time in the tournament, that too in front of their home crowd.
The environment and statistics can create additional pressure on the team. But the former is of the opinion that despite all the pressure, Team India can successfully defend its title.
“The challenge for India will be that no team has won back-to-back T20 World Cups. They will know that. They will know that they are playing on their home ground, and they have been the best team in the competition so far, and they are expected to win. If they can carry that on, and play with the freedom they can against England, I still think they will win the game”, Michael Clarke concluded.
