Pressure is building on Ruturaj Gaikwad after the poor finish to IPL 2026, but Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are not ready to panic yet. Many cricket experts are expecting a major leadership change in the Chennai franchise after another disappointing IPL season.

Social media has been flooded with calls to replace Gaikwad as captain, with many supporting Sanju Samson as the ideal candidate to take charge of the Chennai Super Kings team in the 2027 season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad faces criticism over CSK’s collapse in IPL 2026

The IPL 2026 season was another disaster for CSK as they could only manage six wins from 14 matches and finished the season in eighth place, failing to reach the playoffs once again. Chennai Super Kings have never been able to reach the playoffs since winning the IPL trophy under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

As the results continued to go against him, Gaikwad’s captaincy came under heavy criticism and many began to question whether the burden of captaincy was affecting his game. He is unable to play with the same freedom that made him one of CSK’s most reliable batsmen.

Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 337 runs in 14 innings this season at a strike rate of 123.44. His cautious beginning was often questioned. As criticism increased, Sanju Samson was made the captain of CSK. The wicketkeeper-batsman arrived in Chennai ahead of the 2026 season and brings valuable captaincy experience from his years with Rajasthan Royals.

Many cricket experts believe that Samson is the right choice if CSK ever decides to make a change. But CSK head coach Stephen Fleming defended the captain by saying that no single individual can be blamed for the team’s struggles.

He said that injuries to key players, frequent changes in combinations and ongoing turnovers were the major reasons for Chennai’s poor campaign.

However, despite all the noise outside the dressing room, the latest developments show that CSK has no plans to remove Gaikwad from the captaincy. The franchise stands firmly behind its young leader and believes that he still enjoys the trust of the management.

RevSportz journalist, Rohit Juglan posted on X: “There has been no discussion so far about CSK replacing Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain.”

CSK welcomes RCB to exclusive IPL club after historic back-to-back title wins

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru created history by defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With the win, RCB successfully defended their title and became the third team in IPL history to win consecutive championships after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Immediately after the final, Chennai Super Kings congratulated RCB on social media and welcomed them into the exclusive club of teams defending the IPL trophy. The gesture caught the attention of fans, as CSK had achieved the feat by winning consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011 under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
