The New Zealand cricket team is preparing itself for a thrilling performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, despite a poor performance against India in the recently concluded 5-match T20 series, where the Kiwis lost the match by a margin of 1-4.
New Zealand can make few excuses for their improved performance against India, as they are rarely able to field their strongest playing XI for a match. They came close to naming their all-star players for the 5th match of the series against India, but injury concerns prevented that from ever happening. Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, the New Zealand team management has high expectations from its players as they are on their way to regaining their full fitness.
New Zealand are keeping a close eye on Mitchell Bracewell’s development
It is reported that experienced all-rounder Michael Bracewell is also recovering after a calf injury. The Blackcaps believe he could be ready to go before the start of the tournament. New Zealand will play a practice match against the United States in Mumbai, where Bracewell is expected to play for the national team. He will have to prove his fitness in this match.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said, “I mean, his progress has been really good, and he’s made good progress. Certainly everything looks on track for the practice match against the US.”
Injuries disrupt New Zealand’s plans
Another proven all-rounder, James Neesham, who was on the verge of playing India vs New Zealand 5th T20I, missed the match due to falling ill. To maintain the balance of the playing eleven, the New Zealand team management needed to bring back Lockie Ferguson, who also had injury problems. But he looked in good shape as he took the wickets of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma with his famous fast balls on the flat surface.
Concerns remain over Neesham, as the all-rounder has not played for the Black Caps since November 2025. However, he remained active in the franchise T20 tournament. He performed remarkably well in Bangladesh (BPL) and UAE (ILT20).
The head coach felt that the cricketer can present his current form for the New Zealand cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2026 as well.
James Neesham also under investigation
“Jimmy, who was a little ill at the end of this competition, was obviously completely involved in the Bangladesh Premier League until we won the final,” Walter said.
“So our guys have been very active from a T20 point of view, have been involved in most of the series as well. So from a preparation point of view, I think we can’t really feel unprepared.”
New Zealand will begin their World Cup campaign with a match against Afghanistan on February 8 before facing the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Canada respectively.
