Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam has left his board members in a tizzy after reportedly sending a letter to the Sports Ministry regarding an investigation into the last BCB election.

Reportedly many BCB directors are not happy with the President as they were not properly consulted before the move and this was not the first time that such things had happened.

BCB director angry over not taking advice from Aminul Islam

Tensions rose after the Bangladeshi government set up an inquiry committee to investigate possible irregularities in the last BCB election. Aminul has decided to respond strongly and publicly rather than within the system, causing further frustration among board members.

There is also growing frustration over how major decisions are being taken. According to Cricbuzz report, many directors do not know the complete process behind important calls. Some people believe that they are informed only after the decision has been made, and even then they were not asked for their opinion.

“I think we have had two discussions so far (apart from board meetings). One was when we decided not to play the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, and the other was when we decided to give BDT 2 crore to Dhaka University,” Cricbuzz quoted a director as saying.

Another director shared, “I think we’ve had two discussions so far [apart from the board meeting]: One was when we decided not to play the T20 World Cup and the second time was when they decided to give BDT 2 crore to Dhaka University, and if I am not wrong, it was more like informing us rather than taking our suggestion.

Aminul Islam’s letter has created a new problem within BCB.

Seven BCB directors reportedly supported Aminul Islam’s press release in the group, while Asif Akbar openly supported it with a message.

They are Nazmul Abedin, Mokhlesur Rahman Shamim, Rubabudaula, Abdur Razzaq, Rahat Shams, Hasanuzzaman and Ahsan Iqbal Choudhary. But some board members felt that making the letter public was not the best way to handle the matter.

After receiving formal information from the government, the National Sports Council has already proceeded with the investigation process. Officials have made it clear that the government has the legal power to ask for such an investigation.

National Sports Council is ready to take action

However, Aminul had asked the Sports Ministry to cancel the committee. The committee head received official government orders on 16 March to begin the investigation. NSC official Dolotuzzaman Khan said such issues are completely permitted under the rules.

Dolotuzzaman said, “As per Section 24 of our National Sports Council Act, the government can give instructions to the NSC on any matter as required. So we recommended the same to the inquiry committee.”

Asked whether the International Cricket Council (ICC) could step in, Dolothuzzaman said, “That is much later. It will depend on the extent of irregularities found by the independent investigation committee. Then it will be considered (whether we need to sit with the ICC or not), and then (after discussion with the ICC) the process of taking action will be considered.”
