Shreyas Iyer has already been announced as the India national cricket team T20I captain for the tour against Ireland and England and the Asian Games 2026. The ODI vice-captain has taken over the captaincy from his Mumbai Ranji teammate Suryakumar Yadav, who has been removed as captain after winning the T20 World Cup 2026.

Shreyas Iyer Tata is the only captain in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to lead three franchises to the IPL final, losing twice with Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2020 and 2025 respectively and winning with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024. Since joining PBKS, he has redefined himself as a batsman as well.

Shreyas Iyer will make us all proud – Ness Wadia on Iyer becoming India captain

After Shreyas Iyer was made the captain of India, PBKS co-owner Ness Wadia has for the first time commented on the feeling of Shreyas becoming the captain. He shared his feelings while giving an exclusive interview to Cricbuzz, where he talked about the 31-year-old batsman’s growth as a player and leader.

“I’m sure Shreyas Iyer will make us all proud,” the franchise co-owner told Cricbuzz in an interview, reflecting on the qualities of India’s new T20I captain and a season in which Punjab Kings had a dramatic fall in the campaign after looking almost unstoppable.

“I think this is a first. I’m very proud of her and rightly so. I’m very happy for her family – her mother, father, sister and all the people who have supported her over the years. I’ve only had the privilege of knowing her for a year and a half, and I’m so glad I met her. She’s an amazing person.”

I am very happy for him- Ness Wadia is happy for Iyer’s family

Ness Wadia also felt happy for Shreyas Iyer’s family as he congratulated Shreyas Iyer’s parents and believes that the star batsman will lead the national team with honor and respect.

“This moment is especially important for those who have been around him for so many years. I am very happy for him, and also congratulate him. I am sure Shreyas will lead India with distinction. There is no greater honor than leading your country, right? I am sure he will make India very proud, and make all of us proud too.”

You will become the captain of India one day – Ness Wadia

Ness Wadia also recalled the first moment when he met and talked to Shreyas Iyer in Dharamshala in 2025. The co-owner also revealed that it was he who believed in Shreyas and said that he would become the captain of India.

“Our first meeting was a brief one, for about an hour at my house last year before the Dharamshala camp ahead of IPL 2025. I had spoken to him many times on the phone and things like that, but I had never actually met him in person.

“Within 15 minutes I turned to him and said, ‘You know, you will be the captain of India one day.’ And I said, ‘When you become captain, remember who told you.’ He looked at me with a little surprise and smiled. He said, ‘No, no, no.’
