Since his return to the T20I setup, Shubman Gill has not been able to make a splash with the bat. He has been given a permanent place at the top of the order, but he is yet to play an impressive innings that justifies his selection over players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson.
In the fourth T20I against the Australian team, Gill played a cautious innings and tried to extend his stay in the middle before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis in the 15th over.
He scored 46 runs in 39 balls with the help of 4 fours and 1 six and batted at a strike rate of 117.94. Shubman Gill received heavy criticism for his slow innings, but India captain Suryakumar Yadav praised him, saying that he played according to the conditions.
Now, Gill has received praise from the opposition as well as Nathan Ellis, who said that while he may not associate the Indian vice-captain’s innings with modern T20 cricket, it was really important. He said:
“Shubman Gill played an innings that you wouldn’t associate with today’s T20 cricket, but it was important for him to take the game deeper, which is credit to him.”
Partnership with Shubman was important – Shivam Dubey
All-rounder Shivam Dubey praised Gill, saying that he was not tempted to hit boundaries and concentrated on taking singles and doubles. He said:
“The partnership with Shubman was important. He was motivating us to hit long boundaries,” the Indian all-rounder said.
“We decided to build a partnership, take singles and twos and whatever ball was there to hit, we would target them. It was important for us to hang in there.”
167 runs is definitely a good score on this ground – Shivam Dubey
Dubey further said that India were confident of defending the score after posting 167/8 on the board because they had planned very well.
Dubey said, “167 is definitely a good score on this ground because we have quality bowling, spinners, fast bowlers… I trust them and the whole team trusts our bowlers.”
“Obviously, it is a T20 game and any batsman can come and explode, but on this ground where the side boundaries are big, we had planned it very well and we were confident that we could stop them,” Dubey said.
Notably, India registered a comfortable 48-run win in the match and will head to Brisbane for the series finale, where they will look to achieve another series win under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav.
