Nasser Hussain breaks silence on clash with Brendon McCullum, warns of ‘dismissal’ after Ashes defeat

The focus on England’s disappointing tour of Australia has now focused squarely on Brendon McCullum and the way the head coach has responded to criticism after another Ashes defeat. Now former England captain Nasir Hussain has reacted to McCullum’s criticism.

McCullum has faced heavy criticism after the heavy 4-1 defeat in the Ashes 2025-26. England’s bold and aggressive approach struggled badly in Australia. The fast pitches and difficult conditions exposed the weaknesses of the strategy, and the defeat at the SCG added fuel to the fire.

Since then, there has been growing discussion about whether buzzball needs change rather than blind support. Even the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reportedly asked McCullum to remove the buzzball form from his regime if he wants to remain the head coach.

The former England captain’s tough decision came during a candid interview after the series defeat, where he openly challenged the head coach over his insistence on his ‘baseball’ philosophy.

Heated spat with Brendon McCullum

Hussain revealed that the heated exchange came to a head when he questioned whether McCullum would be willing to change his aggressive approach after being exposed on Australian pitches.

The cricket pundit, quoted by Sky Sports, had asked, “Can you change personally, or is this Brendon McCullum’s philosophy? Can you change your ways, or will you play the same way?”

Responding to the Englishman, McCullum made it clear that he strongly believes in his coaching philosophy but also feels that his views are being misunderstood. However, the coach has insisted that while he is open to making some changes, he is confident in his approach.

McCullum said, “To be honest, I’m angry about it. I’m confident in my methods, but I’m not firm in my beliefs.”

Nasser Hussain’s real blow on McCullum

Hussain later explained why he escalated the issue to McCullum. While the head coach was confident in his methodology, the cricket pundit believed that England had to accept that different situations require different approaches, especially in challenging conditions like Australia.

Hussain wrote in his column for The Athletic: “McCollum was angry when I asked him on Thursday whether he was keen to change. He said he has always been willing to evolve, but did he mean it would be important now? It is right to have a strong belief in his method, but also to realize that he and England need to adapt from time to time.”

Moving on from his exchange with the New Zealand player, Hussain sent a clear message to the ECB. He suggested McCullum now needs to show he can accept guidance from seniors above him or give up the job for the sake of England’s Test future.

He signed off by saying, “Would he be happy for someone higher up to tell him he had to change? He would have to do that if he wanted to stay in the job. Then he would have to demonstrate that he was actually willing to do that and he would have to lift up other voices in his dressing room.”
