Namibia’s Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit repeat the infamous Ajmal-Malik fielding mistake in T20 World Cup 2026

The 2026 T20 World Cup was entertaining to watch. The allies have given the top countries a tough time. The first upset of the tournament has come in the form of Zimbabwe defeating Australia by 23 runs. On Sunday, in the second match of the day, the USA faces Namibia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in their final group game.

USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and decided to bat first. They were off to a good start at 68/1 after 7 overs. Something funny happened on the field during the 8th over when two Namibian fielders were caught looking at the ball.

Namibia’s fielders turned back the clock

After USA captain Monank Patel lofted Peter Myburgh’s ball into the air in 8.4 overs, the two fielders, Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit, gathered and looked at each other as the ball bounced past them and went for four runs. Monank, who scored a half-century in 27 balls with that four.

This has been a strange moment inside the game, as it is reminiscent of the 2008 incident when something similar happened during the Pakistan vs West Indies game. Pakistan cricketers, Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik, were left watching the ball as they were trolled and criticized for dropping similar catches.

Notably, Pakistan cricketers are often trolled for their fielding moments inside the field, ranging from leaking easy boundaries to dropping catches. Pakistan’s other two cricketers, Mohammad Hasnain and Iftikhar Ahmed, had also dropped similar catches against the same opposition in 2021.

America dominates Namibia’s bowlers

Talking about the match, Monank Patel was finally out on the score of 52 runs in 30 balls, JJ Smit finally caught him off the ball of Myburgh. The United States is firing towards the end of the innings.

At the end of the 18th over their score is 180/3. They would like to set a target of over 200 as it is not easy to chase at Chepauk. Sanjay Krishnamurthy and Milind Kumar are opening the innings. The first is batting at 55 runs off 24 balls, and the second is batting at 24 runs off 14 balls.

USA were full of confidence in this match after winning their last match against Netherlands by 93 runs. It was the biggest win by an Associate nation in World Cup history. This team has displayed excellent cricket and almost caused an upset against India in the very first match.

USA still has a chance to qualify for the Super 8s

On the other hand, Namibia come into the match after a heavy 93-run defeat against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. He has struggled in the competition so far and has been eliminated. As they have failed to win any of their matches so far in the competition.

This is USA’s final match of the tournament, and they will look to win it to keep their outside chances of qualifying for the knockout stage alive. If India beats Pakistan, and if Namibia wins their final match, which is against Pakistan, then there are chances that Monank Patel’s team can qualify for the knockouts.
