A major selection headache is already brewing inside the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) season. The franchise has a lot of strong batting options, and this could make it difficult for the team management to fit everyone in the playing eleven.
Mumbai Indians will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 29 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Before the tournament, Mumbai Indians and former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has given a bold statement.
Harbhajan Singh took a bold decision on Mumbai Indians’ overseas opening batsmen.
Harbhajan Singh feels Mumbai Indians may have to choose between two overseas wicketkeeper-batsmen – Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. Even though both are quality players, he feels that it will not be easy to play them together as the team already has many talented Indian batsmen.

Rohit Sharma is a solid opener, while players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma are an important part of the middle order. With so many strong Indian names in the lineup, MI may only have room for one overseas opener, which means either De Kock or Rickelton could make it into the playing eleven.
Don’t think we’ll see Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton play together: Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh said on Star Sports, “I don’t think both of them will start together. I think either Ryan Rickelton will play or De Kock will play. Either of these two guys will be included in the XI. It will be difficult to play both of these guys in the top order because Mumbai has many local players like Rohit Sharma.”
The commentator further added, “He (Rohit) will, of course, have to open with Ryan Rickelton or de Kock and then there are Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Verma and many other good players. So I don’t think we will see them playing together.”
Both players bring different strengths to the table. Rickelton impressed with his aggressive approach at the top last season, scoring 388 runs at a strike rate of over 150. De Kock, on the other hand, is an experienced IPL campaigner who has already played many match-winning innings. This has made the decision even more difficult for the team management.
Spin department presents a tough challenge for Mumbai Indians
There is an interesting situation in the spin department also. The five-time IPL champions will have to choose between Afghanistan’s young spinner Allah Ghazanfar and New Zealand’s all-rounder Mitchell Santner.

Harbhajan believes that Ghazanfar is expected to get more chances because of his unique variations. However, the former spinner has not ruled out possibilities for Santner.
Harbhajan Singh supported Allah Ghazanfar instead of Mitchell Santner
Harbhajan explained, “As far as I know and what my information says, I think we will see Ghazanfar playing most of the games rather than Santner because Ghazanfar brings a lot of variety to the table. He is someone people have not seen a lot of. They have not played against him. That’s what will give him the edge.”
He signed off by saying, “I think Santner will play a few games here and there, maybe in Chennai or on surfaces where it spins, but I think Ghazanfar will continue to play on all types of surfaces and every game.”
