Like the past few years, the Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians rivalry has produced another viral moment ahead of the IPL 2026 clash on May 2.
This time too, Tilak Verma and Jamie Overton were involved, but no angry words were exchanged. Verma had to bear the brunt of Overton’s pace during the match in Chennai.
Mumbai Indians faced another defeat
It seems there is no end to MI’s struggles in IPL 2026. Already ninth on the points table with time running out for playoff qualification, MI slipped with another defeat as CSK completed the season double the number of them.
Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first, but things did not go as per plan. Anshul Kamboj dismissed Will Jacques in the second over itself. Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dheer scored 58 runs each, but no one else made a significant partnership.
Dheer top-scored with 57, but MI’s famous middle order of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Verma failed against the likes of Noor Ahmed and Jamie Overton.
Pandya, in particular, was unable to kick on, scoring just 18 runs from 23 balls. In the end Mumbai could only score 159/7 runs.
CSK never looked in real trouble during the chase. Although Sanju Samson was out early, Urvil Patel’s aggressive cameo set the stage for Ruturaj Gaikwad and Karthik Sharma to score half-centuries and give CSK the much-needed win.
Overton broke Tilak Verma’s fitness band
This incident happened on the last ball of the 12th over of MI’s innings.
Tilak Verma tried to hit Jamie Overton’s fast ball down the leg side, but missed and the ball hit his wrist. The band broke due to the force of the ball hitting the band.
It looked like Verma also needed some attention to his wrist and he was clearly in pain.
The video of the incident has gone viral on the internet.

Tilak Verma’s poor form in IPL 2026
Like Mumbai Indians, Tilak Verma is also struggling for form and consistency.
Against Gujarat Titans, he joined a rare club of batsmen to score an IPL century while batting at No. 5 or lower. However, it has been a struggle since then. In 8 other innings he has been able to cross the 20 mark only once.
Despite a highest score of 101*, Tilak Verma has scored just 193 runs in 9 matches at an average of 24.12, but his strike rate is relatively good at 162.
Bad season of Mumbai Indians and next match
After the defeat against Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai has got only 2 wins in 9 matches. The five-time champion is currently facing defeat in three consecutive matches and is almost out of the race for the playoffs.
