According to the latest comments from Mumbai Indians bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, the franchise is more concerned about Bumrah’s fitness than the number of vacant wickets, as they believe that the great fast bowler will get wickets once his hard work pays off.
Mumbai Indians made it to the playoffs last season, but have failed to maintain their promising status this season too. They are in 10th place after five matches and have shown no glimpse of a comeback. They have already lost four of their last five matches this season.
One of the main reasons for this failure is their weak bowling attack. Although they have only added the likes of Allah Ghazanfar and Shardul Thakur to the lineup from last season, the bowlers have been battered as all have had an economy rate above 12 in this edition. Even great bowler Jasprit Bumrah has become ineffective.
MI bowling coach supports Jasprit Bumrah despite not taking wickets
Mumbai Indians fans are not used to seeing Jasprit Bumrah without taking a wicket for such a long time in any edition of the IPL. The top pace bowler has been a lethal threat in the MI attack, but his impact has been effectively diminished by the batsmen this year. It has been a season for the batsmen so far in the IPL, but Bumrah’s class goes beyond the statistics.
After five matches in the competition, Jasprit Bumrah has bowled 19 overs in this edition of the IPL and has not got any wickets. This is a matter of concern for Mumbai Indians, as their most lethal weapon with the ball is no longer a threat.
However, this has been the case with Bumrah, as players often adopt a cautious approach against the Indian legend as they feel zero threat from the other end. MI’s other bowlers, including Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur, have conceded runs at an economy of over 12 runs per over in almost every game.
Despite this, MI’s bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, has backed the experienced fast bowler and shown confidence in his abilities with the ball, idealizing him as a major match-winner.
“I have no doubts about him,” Mumbai Indians coach trusts Bumrah to turn around MI’s fortunes in IPL 2026
Mhambrey did not consider Bumrah not taking wickets as a matter of concern, as he explained that he has a very different role to play for the team and wickets do not always define a performance.
“I don’t think it’s a challenging situation. Boom is a fighter. He is fighting in his own way. Everything can’t be just about the wicket. He bowls at different stages of the game. At times, he comes into different roles for us in terms of finishing the powerplay,” he said.
The great fast bowler has been injured at the other end and has missed matches for MI on several occasions and Mhambrey’s biggest concern is that in terms of fitness and performance, Bumrah gives his 100% in every game.
He said, “For me, the most important thing is how he comes to practice every session. At the nets, he came with the same intensity, he did what was expected of him. I have no doubts about him. I am sure other people in the team – the captain, the coach and the entire management – also have no doubts about his performance… all that effort will translate into wickets in future games.”
MI will face Gujarat Titans in the rivalry week
Mumbai Indians, who have already lost four consecutive games, need to claw their way back into the competition and to do so, they will have to excel in the rivalry week. Led by captain Hardik Pandya, they will face off against their former franchise, Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
They have two big games against Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in the rivalry week. While the Titans knocked MI out of the IPL 2023 playoffs, Mumbai Indians avenged their defeat in the 2025 playoffs by defeating the Titans.
Ahead of the big game, MI will be aiming to get a 100% fit squad, with Rohit Sharma returning to the top and Will Jacks also back with the side. However, both these things are yet to be confirmed as Rohit is being closely monitored and Jacques is yet to join the Mumbai Indians camp.
