Mumbai Indians need a different captain after Hardik Pandya

table of contents

The IPL 2026 season turned into a complete disaster for the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians. Nothing worked for the five-time champions and fans were left shocked as Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table with only four wins from 14 matches.

From poor team selection, injury problems and batting collapse to bowling failure, poor team combinations and many confusing tactical decisions, everything went against Mumbai Indians this season. The team never looked organized and showed no fighting spirit.

Captain Hardik Pandya has always been on the radar. Ever since he appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain ahead of IPL 2024, the all-rounder has been facing constant pressure from fans and cricket experts. After a poor 2024 season, MI somehow managed to reach the playoffs in IPL 2025, but IPL 2026 completely exposed the cracks within the team.

Hardik had a tough season, scoring only 206 runs and taking only four wickets, even missing five matches due to back spasms. However, it was Hardik’s body language and the way he looked mentally exhausted and emotionally exhausted that exposed the tension lurking inside the MI camp.

Hardik Pandya ready to leave Mumbai Indians

Hardik Pandya is reportedly set to leave Mumbai Indians after a mentally exhausting season. It is being said that the Indian all-rounder has already informed his decision to the MI team management after playing his last league match of IPL 2026.

He was really hurt by the senior players of MI as they did not show 100% commitment in his journey. That being said, the last three years were very tough for Pandya and when he became the MI captain, the senior players changed. Disagreements within the camp made things worse for them.

A PTI report quoted a source as claiming, “Hardik was mentally stressed and completely exhausted. He also had a back injury. In fact, once the play-off hopes were dashed, Hardik informed the decision-makers that he would not stay back. Hardik had decided mid-season that he would not be a part of MI next season. One thing is for sure. He has stopped working with MI.”

According to reports, Hardik had informed the Mumbai Indians management about his decision several weeks before the tournament officially ended. This reportedly happened at a time when MI was almost out of the playoff race.

Some reports even suggested that both Hardik and the MI management were in agreement that parting ways might be the best option for everyone involved after being ruled out of IPL 2026. They will officially announce the decision before the IPL 2027 mega auction.

Hardik Pandya’s successor in Mumbai Indians should not be Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav or Jasprit Bumrah.

With the possibility of Hardik leaving, Mumbai Indians will now have to find a new captain and the biggest question is who that will be. The easiest option would be to bring back Rohit Sharma as captain. Fans still love him and many believe he deserves more respect after winning five IPL titles.

But giving back the captaincy to Rohit will only delay Mumbai’s rebuilding process. Rohit has already given his best years to both Mumbai Indians and Team India. The franchise now needs a long-term solution rather than a temporary emotional decision.

The second option is Suryakumar Yadav, but he has been struggling badly for quite some time. He is already India’s T20I captain and has been struggling for consistency, so putting the extra pressure of captaincy on him may affect his naturally aggressive batting style, especially when there are fitness concerns as well.

Given his captaincy experience, calmness and intelligence, Jasprit Bumrah seems to be the right choice, but making him captain could be risky due to his fitness workload.

Bumrah is India’s leading fast bowler across all formats. He already has a history of serious back injuries, and the BCCI also manages his workload carefully. Therefore, giving full-time captaincy responsibility to Bumrah will increase the pressure on both his body and BCCI, which will definitely not allow it.

Tilak Verma should become the new captain of Mumbai Indians

If Mumbai Indians really want to start a new chapter, then Tilak Verma could be the smartest choice. The young left-handed batsman has quietly become one of the most important players in the MI setup over the last few years.

Since joining the franchise as a teenager, Tilak has shown maturity beyond his years. Being an MI product, the middle-order batsman understands the culture of Mumbai Indians, knows the expectations of the franchise, and has already handled tough match situations several times.

Even during MI’s dreadful IPL 2026 season, when the team was collapsing around him, Tilak impressed with his batting, fearless attitude, composure and ability to take responsibility.

Tilak also had a calm personality, which is very important for leadership. He understands the game beautifully; His brilliant temperament, ability to handle pressure and consistency make him the ideal player to captain MI. Apart from these factors, Tilak also has captaincy experience.

He had already captained India A in the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where his smart captaincy and calm decisions in pressure situations impressed the selectors. He has also led Hyderabad in domestic cricket and is now set to captain India A on the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Tilak has a very good relationship with the Mumbai Indians team management, coaches and support staff. He is young, very talented and can be the face of the franchise for the next decade. After a difficult phase under Hardik’s captaincy, Mumbai now needs a new identity.

Therefore, it could be the right time for MI to trust a young leader and build a completely new team around Tilak rather than returning to the old options. Tilak giving the captaincy could be the beginning of a new era for Mumbai Indians after the perceived division, crisis and failures under Pandya’s leadership.
