Sri Lanka Cricket can amend the contract with its legend Lasith Malinga before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. As per the current contract, Malinga’s tenure with the Sri Lankan national cricket team is from 15 December 2025 to 25 January 2026.
The board signed a short-term contract with him as part of preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The tournament will start from 7th February.
ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Lasith Malinga’s contract is expected to be extended further
According to media reports, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya have reportedly requested the former fast bowler to extend his contract with the national team so that he can be part of the support staff for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Malinga is one of the most active former cricketers who has been supporting the country’s talent for a long time.
Even before joining the national team coaching setup, Malinga developed close relationships with cricketers who are now active in the international circuit. It is expected that the fast bowling legend will be seen in the dugout in the ICC T20 World Cup.
The presence of Lasith Malinga can prove to be very helpful for the team, as the former cricketer is considered among the greatest players of all time around the world. With the experience he has gained during his international and franchise Twenty20 league appearances, the 42-year-old can be useful in advising the bowlers during high-pressure matches in the World Cup, that too in front of their home crowd.

The Sri Lanka cricket team has a strong chance of qualifying for the next round, as they are sharing Group B with Australia, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Oman. The hosts will definitely look to maintain their lead against Oman, Ireland and Zimbabwe. But the match against Australia will test his ability to some extent. Sri Lanka will begin its T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on February 8.
