India national cricket team cricketers Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep have been prominent faces in the domestic circuit as well as international cricket. Two cricketers from Bihar play for Bengal at the Ranji Trophy level, and they have been important parts of the Bengal cricket team over the years, and also play important roles for the state team.
Now Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep have been honored for their on-field contribution to the country and the state. However, interestingly, the award is not being given by the team of the state they represent, but by the state where they have their roots. According to reports, Bihar government has recommended direct appointment of Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep to the post of DSP under sports quota.

Both will soon be seen in police uniform. The Bihar government has recommended the appointment of both these legendary cricketers for their outstanding achievements at the international and domestic level. The proposal has been approved and sent to the Home Department for further official processing. Mukesh and Akash Deep have achieved this position after a lot of struggles.
Mukesh was born in a small village Gopalganj in Bihar. He used to be very poor. His father used to drive an auto-rickshaw in Kolkata. In 2012, he moved to Kolkata on the instructions of his father, who drove an auto there. After excelling for Bengal in domestic cricket, he was selected for the Indian team in all three formats (Test, ODI and T20I).
Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar impressed in respective formats
The experienced fast bowler made his first-class debut on 30 October in the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy. He made his international debut in all formats in 2023 in the Caribbean Islands. He is one of those rare bowlers who was called up to India for the first time before playing a single IPL match. He had sensational performances for Bengal in the 2018-19 and 2019-2020 seasons, taking 54 wickets in the two seasons.
Akash Deep, who also had to struggle like his teammate, but in a different way. Akash Deep’s family opposed his playing cricket, but he never stopped and continued to fulfill his dream. The fast bowler was born in Dehri, Bihar and brought up in Kolkata, West Bengal. His father, Ramji Singh, was a government school teacher in Sasaram, Bihar.
The Bengal pair was important in the 2019-20 Ranji season.
Akash Deep partnered with Mukesh Kumar in the 2019–20 season, where Akash Deep took 35 wickets in the season as Bengal reached the final of the Ranji Trophy. For his impressive performances, he earned his first IPL call-up from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and he impressed in the India A matches against the England Lions, following which he made his senior debut against England in 2024.
Mukesh Kumar has taken 7 wickets in 3 Test matches, 5 wickets in 6 ODI matches and 20 wickets in 17 T20 matches. Akash Deep has played only 10 Test matches so far, in which he has taken 28 wickets in 18 innings. Earlier, among the current male cricketers, Mohammed Siraj was given the role of DSP by Hyderabad.
