MS Dhoni has been one of the best captains in world cricket. It seems that he has defied age and continues to play cricket even at the age of 44. Despite his retirement from international cricket, he continues to play the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni is the only captain in world cricket to win all three ICC trophies (T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy).
However, he continues to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and he was joined in the YouTube conversation by sports broadcaster and commentator Jatin Sapru. Here he was asked whether he had any plans to enter commentary.
MS Dhoni replied that he has no plans to do commentary and also explained the reason behind saying no. Apart from the delicate nature of the work, Dhoni also feels that he is not good at remembering statistics, even his own, which puts him at a disadvantage.
MS Dhoni said during the interaction, “Commentary is very difficult. I think there is a very fine line between describing the game and in that process reaching the area where you start criticizing the individuals playing the game. It is a very thin line.” “Often, you don’t even realize that what you’re doing could be very wrong. You always want to be on the other side where you’re describing the game. If you feel something is wrong you say it.
‘I am not good at statistics’- MS Dhoni
“But how to put it, that’s also an art, how to put it politely where no one is targeted… If the team is losing there are reasons behind it, and you have to have the skill to describe those reasons without making anyone feel bad. That’s the art of commentary,”
“I am not good at statistics…but there are many people who are very good at statistics. They know statistics…If you ask me about my statistics, I would say hmmm and there are some people who know not only about the Indian cricket team or Indian players, but about all the statistics of the entire era.”
MS Dhoni is a good listener
Dhoni, who is known to remain calm on the field even in stressful situations, was asked if he had any cricket or life advice. In response he said, “I’m a very good listener. Yes, I talk to people I’m comfortable with. But I’m more of a listener than a speaker. And if I don’t know the subject I don’t speak much because I’ll absorb more if I listen.”
“I never feel like contributing if I don’t know… Being a good listener doesn’t always mean you’re looking for advice… They just revolve around certain people you’re interacting with. You have to have the intelligence to figure out what works best for you.”
Dhoni finally concluded by saying that he is still not the person who can hold a conversation on the phone. MS Dhoni said, “I am not good at that way of communicating. I like to sit and talk with people. I am not one of those people who is very good on the phone because I cannot see faces. So, I am a very awkward guy when it comes to talking on the phone.”
