Former captain MS Dhoni has not played any of the 10 matches of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. But that hasn’t stopped him from making news once again off the field.
Dhoni’s return to the field after recovering from a calf injury has been delayed, but off the field he is still making news. A new report from India’s Income Tax Department has revealed that MS Dhoni has paid the highest amount of tax of any individual from his home state Jharkhand.

“Around ₹12,000 crore tax collected from Jharkhand” – IT official
While talking to media persons in Ranchi, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Bihar-Jharkhand) Dr D Sudhakar Rao said, “The total collection from Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial year 2025-26 was around Rs 20,000 crore, of which Rs 12,000 crore was collected from Jharkhand alone.”
Rao further said, “MS Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer in Bihar and Jharkhand combined during the last financial year,” but did not disclose the exact amount filed by the former Indian captain.
Hopefully MS Dhoni will be back soon
Chennai Super Kings had a difficult start to their IPL season, but have now found their rhythm. Having already played 10 matches without Dhoni, CSK look settled in their current line-up.

Dhoni has been becoming more active in the nets for the last two weeks. In such a situation, there is speculation about when he will return. And as is always the case with him, retirement speculations are also rife.

Dhoni is not able to play due to calf and knee injury.
While MS Dhoni’s absence has disappointed many fans, there are several reasons for the delay in his return.
In addition to struggling with a calf injury since the start of the season, his knee has also been giving him some grief. Recurring injuries have meant that Dhoni has decided not to leave the team hotel on match days.
It is true that most of the fans come to see him on the field, but MS Dhoni has not yet fulfilled this wish of his fans. There is speculation that Dhoni’s decision to stay in the team hotel is his way of keeping himself away from the limelight.
CSK without Dhoni in IPL 2026
Before 2026, Dhoni had missed only five matches in CSK’s 17-year history as a franchise. In 2026, he had already missed the double. Without him, Sanju Samson has taken charge for CSK.
Samson was newly traded to CSK ahead of the start of IPL 2026. Despite two unbeaten centuries and an 87*, Samson has been hot and cold. Without Dhoni, the lower middle order is still finding its feet.

With 5 wins from 10 matches, CSK are in a strange position if they want to make the top four. If it ever comes to CSK, its net run rate is positive, but so are four other teams.
CSK can take solace from the fact that its next two matches – in Chennai on May 10 and Lucknow on May 15 – are both against 10th-placed Lucknow Supergiants.
LSG snapped a six-match losing streak in their latest game, but are still practically out of action for the season.
