Often hailed as one of the greatest cricketers in the history of the game, Indian legend MS Dhoni has been widely praised as one of the most humble cricketers in the world. A former teammate of veteran cricketer Wasim Jaffer has made some amazing revelations about him.
Former batsman Wasim Jaffer, who was once known as one of the finest red ball batsmen for India, has revealed some shocking facts about former Indian captain MS Dhoni. In the early days of Jaffer’s career, both of them shared the dressing room.
Wasim Jaffer reveals MS Dhoni’s goal to earn enough for a good life in Ranchi
The expert batsman recalled how the Indian wicketkeeper batsman, who made it to the Indian team after a long struggle and many phases of his early life, had a very small dream, which he then considered sufficient for his life.
Although no one can deny MS Dhoni’s extreme love for the game and his determination to win matches for India, according to Wasim Jaffer, he did not build his career around the idea of superstardom or staggering wealth.
He recalled how Dhoni had then promised him to earn around Rs 30 lakh, which he felt was enough to secure a comfortable life with a house and a car. This memory resurfaces as a reminder of Dhoni’s mindset until success and luck changed his life.
Jaffer revealed that Dhoni had told these things to his wife, whom he used to address very affectionately when they started hanging out together after their marriage.
“So he used to call my wife ‘sister-in-law,'” Jafar said as quoted by Hindustan Times. “So he used to say, sister-in-law, I have to earn 30 lakhs… if I want a good life.”
Jaffer quoted Dhoni as saying, “If I want to live a good life in Ranchi… then if I have Rs 30 lakh, that is enough for me. I will have a house and a car. And I can live a happy life.”
“But who knew that destiny had written Rs 30,000 crore?” Wasim Jaffer said
Wasim Jaffer then remembered the period when Dhoni had just started playing for India in 2004. He then compared the modest benchmarks set by Dhoni in his early life and what he achieved throughout his life.
He added, “But who knew that destiny had written not just Rs 30 lakh, but Rs 30,000 crore”, underscoring how dramatically Dhoni’s journey has gone beyond those initial expectations.
MS Dhoni went on to play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and after retirement, he stepped into many other dimensions. However, after announcing his international retirement in 2020, the former Indian star still continues to play for CSK in the IPL.
Wasim Jaffer calls this a reflection of MS Dhoni’s humility.
Although MS Dhoni is one of the highest-paid international stars playing the game, Jaffer claimed that the point he was trying to make was not about money but about temperament.
“I mean, he was a down-to-earth guy. And I’m sure he still is,” he said. He further said that Dhoni was “very polite even then,” “very likeable” and “very friendly.” He concluded by saying that Dhoni, long before he became one of the biggest icons in world cricket, was in the news for his humility.
