Morne Morkel may step down as India’s bowling coach after England series: Report

Troubles are increasing for the Indian national cricket team as bowler Morne Morkel is likely to submit his resignation to the BCCI after the end of the ongoing white-ball series in England.

In fact, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir’s trusted support staff members are reportedly thinking of leaving their roles when their contracts expire after the England tour. Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar has blamed BCCI and IPL after India’s 4-0 T20 series loss to England.

Morne Morkel may leave Team India after England tour

According to a Times of India report, BCCI will have to find a replacement for Morne Morkel before the start of India’s busy international schedule. With a three-match T20 series in Zimbabwe and a Test tour of Sri Lanka, the BCCI may be forced to take a big decision next week.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel is said to be considering his future with the Men in Blue amid the team’s poor performance in the ongoing T20 cricket. The former South African fast bowler’s contract will expire after the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, but he has not confirmed whether he will continue as the team’s bowling coach.

BCCI may soon need a new bowling coach

However, Morkel has also not taken the final decision. According to the report, the Proteas star is still considering his options and discussions are ongoing with BCCI. The board is trying to convince the bowling coach to continue with the Indian national cricket team.

Ryan ten Doeschate, on the other hand, is reportedly unsure about staying with the Indian team for the entire year due to the need to travel. Reports also suggest that he may be in talks with an IPL franchise, so his future with the national team is uncertain.

BCCI trying to convince Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate to stay

Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate joined the Indian coaching setup in July 2024 after Gautam Gambhir became the head coach. Gambhir personally wanted both of them in his support staff and he has worked closely with them over the last two years.

Now, if both the coaches decide to leave, the BCCI may have to make emergency changes before India’s next overseas tour. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin revealed India’s biggest mistake after the defeat on the England tour.

The Indian cricket board is currently in discussions with both Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate in the hope of finding a solution, but they have not made any decision yet.

T. Dileep unlikely to get contract extension for Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka tours

The Men in Blue are scheduled to tour Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series later this month. It is expected that VVS Laxman will go to Zimbabwe with the team. Soon after, India will travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series in the first week of August.

If Morkel does not continue in the post, then BCCI can send the newly appointed Center of Excellence fast bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji with the Test team.

On the other hand, fielding coach T. Dileep is unlikely to get an extension following the team’s poor fielding efforts since his return to the team last year. Dileep’s BCCI contract is set to expire after the upcoming ODI series in England and the fielding coach is set to be changed before the Zimbabwe tour.
