Team India’s fast bowler Mohammad Siraj opened his friendship with Test Captain Shubman Gill after the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Siraj said that he calls Gill his “Banni”, saying that his mutual understanding has deepened after making his MCG debut together.
Shubman Gill and Siraj impressed with their performance in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which ended in 2–2 draws. Pacer was about to take a major wicket with 23 wickets, while Gill topped the run chart with 754 runs, including four centuries. He also plays for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL.

In a recent interview with Revsports, Mohammad Sirj said that he and Shubman Gill shared several milestones in their visit, including reaching the top of the ICC ODI rankings at the same time. Siraj said that his friendship is beyond the field.

“Shubman and I have been together for a long time. We have played India A. We have also spent time from the field. We have made our test debut together in MCG, and have also become ODI No.1 (ICC rankings) at the same time. We have a lot of memories simultaneously,” Siraj said.
“He is also the captain of the Gujarat Titans. We batt and keep talking together in the nets. I keep telling him that you are made of mine. Our understanding is very easy, and it reflects on the field. He understands what I want, what I do, and on the contrary,” he said.

In the same conversation, Mohammad Sirj also expressed his praise for the development of Shubman Gill as a leader. He shared his best wishes to Gill, who has been appointed as the vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav for the 2025 Asia Cup. Siraj hoped that the team could secure the trophy in the tournament.
“I am really proud of his growth as a captain, and now that he is a vice-captain for the Asia Cup, I definitely want to bring him back the trophy. Happy him and the team,” Siraj said.
Mohammad Sirraj has not been included in India’s 15 -member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. The eight-team tournament will start in UAE on 9 September. India is placed in Group A along with UAE, Pakistan and Oman.
When was Mohammad Siraj last introduced India to T20I for India?
Mohammad Siraj last played T20I for India during the 2–0 series win in Sri Lanka in July 2024, where he took just one wicket in three matches. He was also part of India’s T20 World Cup campaign, but was replaced by an additional spinner in Xi after taking only one wicket in three matches.
Siraj has been absent from India’s recent T20i fixtures, missing series against Bangladesh, South Africa and England. Earlier in 2025, he was also released from the Champions Trophy squad.
Hyderabad Pesar has struggled to influence the smallest format, with more than 32 wickets in 16 T20s and 7.79 with an economy of 7.79. He claimed 16 wickets in 15 matches at an economy rate of more than nine during the IPL 2025 season.
