Mohammad Amir blocks appointment of Sarfaraz Ahmed as Pakistan head coach

Sarfaraz Ahmed could be the new head of the Pakistan cricket team for the Test format. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not yet made an official announcement in this regard. Earlier, as soon as the reports related to Sarfaraz and Pakistan Test team came out, the cricket experts of the country were shocked.

Amid the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, the Pakistan Cricket Board is reportedly considering some big steps to improve the national team. During a debate, former international fast bowler Mohammad Amir opposed making Sarfaraz Ahmed the head coach of the national team.

Pakistan Cricket Board is preparing to appoint Sarfaraz Ahmed as head coach.

Just days after Pakistan’s exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, it was widely reported that former Pakistan national cricket team captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has achieved significant success as a mentor with the Under-19 team, is set to be appointed as the head coach of the senior cricket team for the Test format.

In theory, it sounds very exciting, but the reality may be different, and it could be detrimental to the senior cricket team, Mohammad Amir stressed during the live debate.

Mohammad Aamir warned Sarfaraz and Pakistan Cricket Board

The former Pakistan fast bowler claims that he has a good relationship with Sarfaraz Ahmed and they often talk to each other. There is no doubt that Sarfaraz did a great job with the Under-19 team. But, taking immediate action and appointing the former captain as the head coach of the Test team could prove fatal for the national cricket team as well as Sarfaraz.

“He is a winning captain. I respect him a lot. We talk to each other a lot. I told you earlier that he is working at the Under-19 level. It is a great thing. He will learn from the experience here. All of a sudden, the coach of the Pakistan team, the head coach! It is not good for him and it is not good for Pakistan cricket”, Mohammad Amir expressed his assessment.

The post of head coach of Pakistan’s Test team is vacant since last year. Pakistan’s previous Test series, which was against South Africa at home, ended in a draw due to former cricketer Azhar Mahmood being the interim coach.

Babar Azam has been dropped from the ODI team

Now, as the team is out of the T20 World Cup 2026 title race, the PCB is turning its focus to the longest format of the game. Although there is still speculation about Sarfaraz Ahmed becoming the head coach of Pakistan Test team, it has not been officially confirmed yet.

If things go according to plan, Ahmed can debut as a head coach in Test cricket during Pakistan’s tour of Bangladesh.

In a separate development, the PCB dropped Babar Azam and Sam Ayub from its ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour. Shaheen Afridi has been made the captain of the ODI team.
