Mohammad Amir accuses ICC umpires of cheating to favor India in ‘Shimron Hetmyer out’ decision

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir on Sunday (March 1) made explosive claims about the umpiring decision involving Shimron Hetmyer in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match between India and Pakistan at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Aamir openly questioned the dismissal of Shimron Hetmyer and suggested that the decision went in India’s favor at the crucial moment. He believes that the dismissal was extremely controversial and feels that if Hetmyer had continued for a few more overs, West Indies could have easily taken their total to 220 or 230 runs and eliminated India from the T20 World Cup 2026.

Mohammad Aamir criticized the controversial dismissal of Shimron Hetmyer

“I think Shimron Hetmyer’s wicket was very controversial. I don’t think he was actually out at that time. If he had stayed at the crease and played a little longer, West Indies could have easily scored 220 to 230,” Mohammad Amir said on Geo News’ ‘Harna Mana Hai’ show.

In that situation, India would have been under immense pressure while chasing 195 runs. To chase such a huge target, India needed a strong and long innings. Sanju Samson played exactly the same kind of innings. He played an excellent innings and led the team to victory.”

Controversy erupted as soon as Shimron Hetmyer was out at Eden Gardens.

The whole drama happened at Eden Gardens when Shimron Hetmyer was given out in a very tense moment and he clearly did not agree with the decision. West Indies had to win this match at any cost and they were batting strongly against the Men in Blue.

They were already at 102 for 1 and were looking to put a big score on the board in their final Super 8 stage match. But the drama started in 11.3 overs. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a short length ball. The ball went past the left-handed Hetmyer.

Hard-hitting batsman Shimron Hetmyer tried to play a big slog shot across the line to continue his attack. But the ball came very close to his inner edge and went straight to Indian wicketkeeper Sanju Samson behind the stumps. On-field umpire Chris Gaffney immediately raised his finger and caught him out.

Shimron Hetmyer surprised, took review against Jasprit Bumrah

But Hetmyer looked surprised. He didn’t look at all convinced and went for review. The West Indies batsman was confident that the ball had not touched his bat. He also indicated with his hands that there was a clear gap between the bat and the ball. He kept shaking his head.

The noise of the crowd further confused the situation. When the ball passed near the bat, there was a loud noise in the stadium. Sometimes in such intense conditions, it becomes very difficult for the umpires to take decisions clearly.

Even in the dugout, West Indies head coach Darren Sammy looked disappointed. Sammy can be seen shaking his head in disbelief in replays shown near the team area. The former captain did not seem satisfied with this decision.

final call

Well, the third umpire checked the ultra-edge. A clear spike was visible on the screen when the ball passed the bat. That spike meant that there was contact between the bat and the ball. Because of that, the original decision was put on hold. West Indies lost their review and Hetmyer had to withdraw after scoring 27 runs in just 12 balls. He walked away slowly, still shaking his head.

He looked clearly upset and disappointed. He was attacking strongly and helping West Indies move towards a very big score. His wicket at that time was a big turning point and it played a big role in their five-wicket defeat against India. With this heartbreaking defeat, West Indies’ journey in the T20 World Cup 2026 ended with India reaching the semi-finals.
