The night bar incident in Wellington, New Zealand turned out to be a real deal for the England cricket team ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The controversial out-of-field incident took place last year when the England cricket team was on a tour of New Zealand. The nightclub incident exposed the drinking habits of the England cricket team, including their star cricketers such as Harry Brook and Ben Stokes.

Even months after the incident, the ‘Three Lions’ still have to deal with the chapter. Will this incident affect his T20 World Cup 2026 performance? Will England’s white-ball team captain Harry Brook be able to recover from all the failures he has faced in recent times? Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali spoke openly on these questions.

Moeen Ali is not disappointed with the love of alcohol of England cricketers

Moeen Ali believes that England has some cricketers who have the ability to overcome a situation like the nightclub incident in New Zealand. The former cricketer said that Ben Stokes and Harry Brook are players who know how to deal with such situations. Ali said that Brook has probably learned from the situation and will guide the team to live up to the expectations in the T20 World Cup 2026.

“100%. And you know, there are some people, there are some players in cricket, it’s strange to say, but one needs to go through it. And Stocksy (Ben Stokes) was one kind of thing. And (Harry) Brook is another. And it doesn’t affect them”, Moeen Ali said on ESPN Cricinfo.

The 38-year-old further claimed that the controversy escalated because England lost the match. He believes that if the team is successful in winning, there will not be so much noise about the drinking culture.

Ali said, “I know there’s a lot of talk about the drinking culture, but people only brought it up because we lost. It’s not as bad as people taking advantage of it. If we had won, no one would have said anything.”

Ali has high expectations from the England cricket team

Moeen Ali believes Brooks and England cricket team head coach Brendon McCullum can silence their critics by guiding the team to the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, starting on February 7.

Ali said that England’s batting line-up looks really good on paper, as they have several quality batsmen in the setup. Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook are potential batsmen who can wreak havoc in subcontinental conditions. Ali would like to see Brook in a top-order role as a No. 3 batsman rather than lower down the middle.

Three lions in a less competitive group

“With the batting order, it doesn’t feel right, but we have played okay. I think Bethel is okay in the three, but I would put my best three players at the top, and they are Salt, Jos and Brook. Brook is already one of the best players in the world. Not to put any pressure on him, but he can easily dominate international cricket for the next 10 years,” Ali explained.

England will start their campaign on 8 February. Their first match of the tournament is against Nepal. In Group C, along with Nepal, they have been paired with Italy, Scotland and West Indies.
