Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc took his 415th wicket in Test cricket by dismissing English batsman Harry Brook. With this wicket, he is now the most successful left-arm fast bowler in red-ball cricket history.
The Ashes are underway and Australia are once again dominating the series on home soil, with an early lead over England after the first Test in Perth. Starc single-handedly took 10 wickets in two innings in Perth and was praised for his performance.
The fast bowlers have put in some commendable performances in the Ashes and Starc has been a favorite among them. In the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Starc has made full use of his experience on the field.
Mitchell Starc has become the best left arm fast bowler by surpassing Wasim Akram.
As Australia reached the Gabba for the second Test, Mitchell Starc bowled with the pink ball. He made a fancy record with the glowing ball in day and night games. Starc took three wickets in the innings and with the dismissal of Harry Brook, he overtook the former record of the Pakistani fast bowler.
Considered one of the greatest left-arm fast bowlers in the history of the game, Wasim Akram took 414 wickets in his career, which was spread over 104 matches. With Brook’s dismissal, Starc’s record became 415th wicket.
Mitchell Starc reached this record a little before the Pakistani legend as he made the record with 102* in matches and two matches. He has broken his record in the Ashes by taking 13 wickets in two matches so far. The first 10 wickets came in the two innings in Perth with 7 and 3 wickets respectively.
Starc close to Richard Hadlee in terms of all-time Test records
Mitchell Starc has recently achieved this feat and is close to the records of many other spinners in the team. With 415 wickets to his name, he is behind Shaun Pollock, Harbhajan Singh and even former New Zealand fast bowler Richard Hadlee.
Starc is now 16th in the list of all-time red-ball wicket-takers, as he is just 2 wickets away from breaking Harbhajan Singh’s record. Starc is also just 7 wickets away from surpassing former South African fast bowler Shaun Pollock as he can surpass this record in this Ashes.
New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee took 431 wickets in his entire career and Mitchell Starc will be the second highest wicket taker among Oceania fast bowlers. Till now only Glenn McGrath has more wickets than him.
Mitchell Starc is emerging as Australia’s strongest candidate in this Ashes.
Australia took the wickets of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in the first over of the game, as they were 2 out in the second over of the game. Jack Crawley and Joe Root saved England’s innings after the players were out early.
Joe Root is closing in on his maiden century in Australia, while on the historic day English players wore black armbands and observed silence for former England batsman Robin.
