New Zealand cricket team captain Mitchell Santner is arguably the most satisfied man in the world as his team defeated South Africa by 9 wickets to enter the final. After the semi-final clash, Santner revealed how he came up with the formula to beat South Africa, a team who were undefeated before tonight’s (4 March) clash.
The New Zealand captain said he had gained some valuable knowledge from their previous encounter with the same opponent. South Africa defeated New Zealand by miles in the group stage of T20 World Cup 2026. Tonight, it’s the Blackcaps’ turn to show what they can do.
Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand learned from the past
Mitchell Santner praised South Africa during the presentation ceremony after the match and said that it was a satisfying moment for him. The defeat against the Proteas in Ahmedabad was a learning opportunity for him. The team can even learn something from the victory.
“It was good. I think we obviously knew how good South Africa are, and they showed that throughout the tournament. So, to have a performance like that in a tough game is obviously quite pleasing. I think every time, when you perform well or you lose a game, you are learning from that. I think when you win you also learn”, Santner said.

New Zealand went to bowl first in the first innings and introduced a spinner early to baffle the top order of the South African batting unit. When he was in Ahmedabad a few days ago, Santner went with the fast bowlers, which did not work. Learning from the past, he bought the spin attack early in the match.
“We obviously bowled a bit more spin in the beginning, which we didn’t do in Ahmedabad. But I think, if you can take wickets throughout the overs, then obviously it’s a challenge to keep batting. There was always a plan for the first two overs (talking about bowling strategy) and after that it’s kind of a free fall”, explained the Kiwi skipper.
At the end of the day, it was aggressive opener Finn Allen who completely took the game away from South Africa. Santner hopes to see a similar performance in the finals as well. They will face India or England in the summit clash.

Mitchell Santner also said that they played on different grounds and on different soils, which made the task more challenging. As the team passed today’s test with dominance, everything is looking good for them now.
“And then obviously, Feeney (Allen) kept going and, I mean, 33 balls for 100, that’s not bad. Not bad at all. It would be nice if we could (repeat that in the final). But again, it’s a different ground. Obviously, we’ve been there before. I think depending on where you are, it’s red clay, black clay. You know, so there are a lot of different factors that shape different Going into the round, I think we’ll obviously be very happy with the win tonight”, Mitchell Santner concluded.
