New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner was involved in a rare moment during The Hundred match between Birmingham Phoenix and Trent Rockets when he asked the on-field umpire to review his run-out. Replays showed that Santner had lagged behind his ball, after which he was given out and the video went viral.
The incident occurred during the fourth men’s match of the season at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Friday, 24 July. Birmingham Phoenix beat Trent Rockets by 10 runs after defending a total of 214. Santner had a disappointing performance, finishing with figures of 0/39 before conceding seven runs from eight balls.

During the 85th ball of the Trent Rockets chase, Tom Banton drove Ben Dwarshuis to long-off and called for the second run. Donovan Ferreira collected the ball and threw it to Ben Dwarshuis. Mitchell Santner came back at the non-striker’s end and made a full-length dive.
It appeared that Dwarshuis misfired the throw and the ball hit the stumps. The on-field umpire did not send the decision up, believing that Santner had presented his side. However, Santner himself asked whether the run-out had been reviewed.
After this the umpire referred the decision to the third umpire. Replays showed that despite his diving, Santner had failed to get his bat behind the popping crease before breaking the stumps. He was given out, leaving players and spectators astonished by this unusual incident.
Joe Clarke and Will Smeed lead Birmingham Phoenix to 214
Invited to bat first, Birmingham Phoenix made a great start. Openers Joe Clarke and Will Smeed dominated the Trent Rockets bowlers and brought up the team’s 100 runs in just 44 balls, putting the opposition under early pressure.
Clarke completed his half-century off 24 balls and continued to attack the bowlers with his aggressive stroke play. Kelvin Harrison ended the opening partnership of 104 by dismissing Clarke for 68, while Smeed also completed his half-century with 51 off 28 balls before falling to Harrison.
The middle order maintained the rhythm in the final stages. Rehan Ahmed scored 48 runs in 25 balls, while Donovan Ferreira remained unbeaten on 22 runs in nine balls. Birmingham Phoenix finished with a mammoth score of 214/4, their highest score in The Hundred.
Tom Banton’s 67 runs went in vain as Trent Rockets lost by 10 runs.
Chasing 215, Trent Rockets got off to a positive start through Finn Allen and Ben Duckett. The pair added 54 runs during the first 25 balls, before Usman Tariq dismissed Allen for 43 off 17 balls. Scott Currie then brought Birmingham Phoenix back under control by dismissing Duckett for 49 runs.
Despite early wickets, Tom Banton played an aggressive innings to keep the chase going. He completed his half-century in just 26 balls and shared a 34-run partnership with Mitchell Santner. However, Currie struck again to dismiss Banton for 67 off 32 balls, leaving Trent Rockets with little to do.
Kelvin Harrison gave the team the lead by scoring unbeaten 12 runs including two consecutive sixes, but the target proved to be out of reach. Trent Rockets finished 204/7, 10 runs short of the contest.
