Giving a big shock to the entire cricket world, Australia was out of the T20 World Cup 2026 and captain Mitchell Marsh has now broken his silence on this embarrassment. Australia had high expectations, but their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign ended much earlier than they expected.
Australia is out in big shock in T20 World Cup 2026
Kangaroo is one of the biggest teams in world cricket. They have won six ODI World Cups, one T20 World Cup and the ICC World Test Championship in the past. Given his past success and stature, many believed he would excel in this tournament as well.
But things did not go his way. The turning point came when they lost to Zimbabwe by 23 runs in a match where they were completely defeated. That defeat put him under immense pressure. Then came another defeat against Sri Lanka, which worsened their situation.

They finished their campaign with a strong nine-wicket win over Oman, but it was not enough to remain in the tournament, as a Zimbabwe versus Ireland washout sealed their fate. Now Mitchell Marsh admitted that the Australian dressing room is very disappointed.
It’s extremely disappointing: Mitchell Marsh
The captain said that he had prepared for this event for almost two years. Marsh feels that he had a trophy-winning team, but he did not play his best cricket in the most important matches.
Mitchell Marsh said in the post-match presentation, “It’s probably a missed opportunity. As I’ve said many times, this is a very disappointing changing room. Like every team, we’ve worked towards this for two years.”
Unfortunately, in some key games, we did not play our best cricket – and that is tournament games. You lose the match against Zimbabwe and suddenly you are under pressure. “Credit to them, they played well, but we are a very disappointed group right now.”

Mitchell Marsh refuses to blame circumstances for Australia’s exit from T20 World Cup 2026
The T20 World Cup 2026 is being held in India and Sri Lanka and the circumstances were different in both the places, but Marsh refused to accept this as an excuse.
Mitchell Marsh said, “I don’t think the conditions were the main issue. In Colombo, it was slow, but we prepared for it. I still believe we had the team to do the job. But in tournament cricket, if you miss even a little bit, you can lose a game which will put you on the backfoot.”
Injuries also caused a lot of damage to Australia in the tournament. Pat Cummins was out even before the tournament started. Josh Hazlewood was also not fit, and then the Australian all-rounder himself suffered a serious health issue, internal testicular bleeding, and missed the opening two matches of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Marsh signed off by saying, “Over the last few weeks, we had good opportunities, but when it mattered most we weren’t able to perform.”
