Mitchell Marsh breaks silence on Test return for Ashes ahead of India’s ODI matches

The Australian team has not been able to deliver its best performance in the ODI format since the last World Cup in 2023. Defending champions captain Mitchell Marsh, who is leading the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, has shown no keenness towards a return to the Ashes and is set to focus on the upcoming white-ball series against India.

Australia is all set to host India for a white-ball series, which is seen as the first step towards preparing for the title defense at the upcoming 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa. They have already hosted South Africa for an ODI series and lost the series 2–1.

Although the Australian team has been dominating in Test and T20I cricket, it has not been the same story in the 50-over format, where they have failed several times despite being world champions. Even captain Pat Cummins has been absent from important games like the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Mitchell Marsh dismisses possibility of Test comeback

Mitchell Marsh is leading Australia in the 50-over format in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, who led them to the World Cup title in 2023. On the verge of starting World Cup preparations, Marsh has dodged the question he is being asked time and again.

Given his excellent white-ball form, questions are being raised about Mitchell Marsh’s chances of making an Ashes comeback. Injuries to Australian players are also a big reason for this. Marsh was asked about whether he had started thinking about an unexpected Ashes call-up.

“I’ve got tickets for day one and day two. I haven’t asked my wife yet, so that’s as much as I’ve thought about it,” Mitchell Marsh told reporters, smiling. Beau Webster has been a constant for Australia since then.

Australia will experiment with its batting order against India

There have been some major changes in the Australian team in recent times, with Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis announcing their retirement from the ODI format. The Australian team is further weakened by the absence of Josh Inglis, Alex Carey and Cameron Green, who will miss some or all of the series against India.

Mitchell Marsh said of his WA teammate Green, “He’s fine, it’s just on the very short end. It’s a cautious move on this, but he’s all good,” proving that this humiliation clearly has an impact on the Ashes.

In his absence, the Australian coach may consider experimenting with a new group of players who have been showing promising performances in domestic one-day tournaments over the past few seasons. Some of them are batsman Matt Renshaw and all-rounder Mitchell Owen, who is set to make his ODI debut. This series also sees the return of Marnus Labuschagne and gloveman Josh Philippe.

Matt Short, the batsman who played for Australia and then faced setbacks in the form of injuries, will also have a big opportunity with this development. “We know he opens for Victoria and the Strikers and in T20 cricket around the world,” Marsh said of Short. Short has opened in 11 of his 13 ODI innings.

Mitchell Marsh praised Indian greats before Sunday’s match.

Mitchell Marsh has praised Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and called it a privilege to play with them on the field. He has described Virat as the greatest chaser in the world and also gave a glimpse of his strategy for the series.

“I’ve been fortunate to play against them a lot on this journey,” Marsh said of Kohli and Rohit. “They’re obviously legends of the game, Virat is the greatest chaser we’ve ever seen in this format.”
