Former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin is soon set to take up a powerful new role in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). In fact, the final candidate list was released on May 25, and it is almost certain that Minhajul Abedin will become the BCB director in the upcoming BCB elections.
The former Bangladesh captain has been associated with cricket administration for many years after retirement. Minhajul has already worked with the national selection panel for over a decade and has also served as the chief selector of Bangladesh.

Due to his long experience inside the system, he is now seen as a key figure within the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Minhajul is also currently a part of BCB’s ad-hoc committee.
Minhajul Abedin set for powerful new BCB role
BCB Election Commission announced the final list of candidates and confirmed that only two candidates are left from Chattogram Division in Category 1 after Shariful Islam withdrew from the election race. Since there are two director posts available from the division, both Minhajul Abedin and Moin Uddin Chaudhary are expected to become directors unopposed.

After this development, Minhajul Abedin said that he feels honored to get the opportunity to work as BCB director. He also admitted that now the responsibility will become very big for him. The former Bangladesh captain is also excited to share all his experience he has gained over the years to help grow the game in the region and country.

Cricbuzz quoted Minhajul as saying, “It is a great privilege to join the BCB as a director, but at the same time my responsibility has also increased a lot. After retirement, I joined the board and worked in various capacities and will now try to share those experiences in the board room. Since I am from Chattogram, I will try to revive Chattogram’s cricket. Regional cricket first started in Chattogram and we are trying to revive regional cricket again.” Will try.”
Meanwhile, the BCB Election Commission has confirmed that the elections are scheduled to take place on June 7, but voting will now take place only in certain divisions where several candidates are still in the race.
BCB elections will be held only in Khulna and Barishal.
In Category 1, elections will be held only in Khulna and Barishal divisions. In Khulna, three candidates – Shafiqul Alam, Shantanu Islam and Mohammad Abdus Salam – are fighting for the two available director seats. On the other hand, there will be a direct fight between Muntasir Alam Choudhary and Mizanur Rahman for a spot in Barisal.
Several other candidates have already been elected unopposed. From Dhaka division, Syed bin Osman and SM Abdullah Al Fuad have secured the director post, while Abdul Qayyum Choudhary has been selected from Sylhet. On the other hand, Mirza Masood Amin and Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto will represent Rangpur and Rajshahi respectively.

Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir also became director automatically from Category 3 after being the only candidate in that section. However, Lutfur Rahman of Legends of Rupganj and Mahmudur Rahman of Old Dhaka Cricketers withdrew from the Dhaka club category.
Tamim Iqbal among big names vying for director posts in Dhaka club category
Now, 16 candidates are still fighting for the 12 director posts in Category 2. Some of the biggest names in the running include former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal as well as representatives from renowned clubs such as Abahani Limited, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Shinepukur Cricket Club, Uttara Cricket Club and many other Dhaka-based teams.
There are a total of 25 directors in Bangladesh Cricket Board. Of them, 12 directors come from Dhaka clubs, 10 are elected from regional divisions and districts, one represents former cricketers and organisations, while the remaining two are nominated by the National Sports Council. The newly elected directors will later select the next BCB president after the election process ends on June 7.
