Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has revealed about the poor form of legends Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah in IPL 2026.

After losing to Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, MI are almost out of the race for the playoffs in IPL 2026. For a team that has won the trophy five times, this is a completely unexpected rite of passage.

Before the season started, MI was hailed as the team to beat because of their star power. Mumbai Indians included four players from India’s 2026 T20 World Cup-winning team – MI captain Hardik Pandya, India captain Suryakumar Yadav, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, and young batsman Tilak Verma.

Now, however, all four are badly out of form, and as a result Mumbai Indians are ninth in the IPL 2026 points table. Let us tell you that MI’s five-time IPL trophy winning captain Rohit Sharma is currently injured.

key points

  • Mahela Jayawardene supports Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah
  • Said both players are close to regaining form
  • Mumbai Indians are struggling at the bottom of the table

Bad form of all Mumbai Indians players

With just one half-century, Suryakumar Yadav has scored just 183 runs in 9 matches at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 144.

Tilak Verma scored a century early in the season, but could only manage 193 runs in 9 matches with a high score of 101*. His average is only 24 but his strike rate is relatively good at 165.

Captain Hardik Pandya has also not been able to leave any special impact with the bat. In 8 matches, he has scored 146 runs at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 136, with a high score of 40.

Pandya’s performance with the ball has been even worse. He has bowled more than 20 overs in the tournament but has taken only 4 wickets. His average is 61.50 and economy is around 12 runs per over.

Jasprit Bumrah is completely out of form with the ball in IPL 2026. In 9 matches, he has taken just 3 wickets with a respectable economy of 8.6, but an impressive average of 94.67.

“It’s just a matter of time” – Jayawardene on Suryakumar Yadav

Mahela Jayawardene speaks during the post-match press conference following MI’s loss to Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, May 2.

On Suryakumar Yadav, Jayawardene said that it is basically a matter of time until he finds his rhythm, even with just 5 matches left in the season.

“I don’t think his output is low; if he puts a few scores together, I think he will get the momentum going. He played really well today for that period, in that phase he really took on the bowlers. I think he could have played a few more overs and scored really well.”

He said, “Sometimes when things don’t go your way it doesn’t go to the right place; I think that was a very good shot that went straight to the fielder. He’s definitely up for it, I think he’s in a good place, it’s just not working out the way he has this season. He’s been caught on the boundary with some of those shots. It’s just a matter of time but I think he’s disappointed himself but he’s got to keep working hard.”

Suryakumar Yadav has scored only one half-century in IPL 2026. Interestingly, he was the stand-in captain for that one match.

Jayawardene on Jasprit Bumrah said that MI’s collective bowling failures were hampering Bumrah’s output.

He stressed, “It’s not just boom; it’s a collective effort of all the bowlers. When everyone is working together and you are taking wickets here and there, it helps Bumrah to be a little more aggressive rather than playing catch up. Everyone has a slow season, but class is always permanent.”
