The Sydney Sixers have been one of the most successful franchises in the Big Bash League (BBL). They have appointed Matthew Mott as their new head coach for the next season. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the sudden departure of former Australian all-rounder James Hopes, who has joined Queensland, as he has also left the WBBL post.
However, the franchise is yet to fill the position of women’s head coach. According to the Cricinfo report, the post will be filled later this week. Matthew Mott previously served as an assistant coach for the franchise, and is now the Sixers’ third head coach this year after Hopes replaced Greg Shipperd.
Matthew Mott’s record as head coach
Matthew Mott has signed a two-year deal with the franchise. He joined the WBBL as a head coach last year, the franchise wanted him to take over the role of BBL head coach as well, but ultimately it was decided to keep the men’s and women’s teams under separate head coaches.
Matthew Mott was the former coach of the Australian women’s cricket team, which won consecutive T20 World Cup titles, ODI World Cup 2022 and four Ashes series.
Mott also previously coached the England men’s white-ball cricket team and helped the team win the 2022 T20 World Cup. He has a good record as a head coach and would like to bring back glory to the Sydney Sixers.
Rachel Haynes shares Sydney Sixers plans for upcoming BBL and WBBL
Sydney Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes is pleased to appoint Matthew Mott as head coach, and she is looking for separate head coaches for the BBL and WBBL, as the windows will change every season for stability in both teams and tournaments.
“With the BBL and WBBL windows likely to change each season, we have appointed different head coaches for each team to ensure continuity and long-term stability across both programs,” said Rachel Haynes.
“While we considered Matthews’ ability to lead both programs, we have taken a long-term view to ensure consistent and stable leadership across both teams. The strength of the candidate we appointed as WBBL head coach led us to believe this was the right move for both programs, and we look forward to announcing that news in the coming days.”

After being appointed as the head coach, Mott is happy and excited about the role, as he says that he has been a part of this franchise for a long time and this team has a long history of winning trophies, and he is looking forward to winning more trophies and successful seasons.
Following his appointment as head coach, Mott said, “I’ve been a part of the Sixers family for a long time, so having the opportunity to step into the role of BBL head coach is something I’m extremely excited about.”
