The future of cricket in Australia is reaching a new turning point as the country’s apex cricket governing body is proposing to privatize its franchise league, the Big Bash League (BBL). While some franchises have some objections, most owners of BBL teams have agreed to the market exploration.
The experienced Australian all-rounder was shocked to learn that Cricket Victoria is planning to merge its two franchises – Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades. Since the inception of the league, these two Melbourne teams have established themselves as rivals.

Marcus Stoinis gives his opinion on privatization of BBL
Fans and cricketers thoroughly enjoyed the rivalry between the two Melbourne teams. Following privatisation, the league will move in a new direction, perhaps without the Melbourne Derby for the foreseeable future. Marcus Stoinis is among the top Australian talents who welcome privatisation, but he found it hard to accept the fact that the Melbourne derby is going to be weakened in the Big Bash League.
Marcus Stoinis is a legend of Melbourne Stars. The batting all-rounder had played for the franchise from the 2013-14 season till the previous edition of the league. So, he knows, and he feels the emotions around the league and certain matches, which makes it all the more special among the local fans.
“I am very pro-privatisation” – Marcus Stoinis supports BBL privatization
With the bat, the middle-order batsman has scored 3250 runs in 116 innings at a strike rate of 133.53 and an average of 34.21. With the ball, the all-rounder has taken 59 wickets in 69 innings at an economy rate of 8.43.

“I mean, yes, it’s interesting times. It was a shock to a lot of people, not intended to go personal. I think it’s obviously been well documented by a lot of people and players,” Stoinis said via Code Sports.
“Well, I’m very pro-privatisation myself. I think it’s generally moving in that direction, and I’d like the Big Bash to maintain that and become the second-largest comp in the world, which I think would require something like privatisation. But then in terms of the Melbourne side of things, the Victorian side of things, I think, look, it’s tough,” he added.
“They haven’t won anything” – Marcus Stoinis on Melbourne Stars
While he supports the privatization proposal, Cricket feels a little sentimental at the thought of spending so many years with a BBL team where some of the game’s greatest players have also left their mark. Marcus Stoinis has talked about the legacy of countless people, the hard work and all the involvement he has had over the years.
Stoinis added, “I’ve played for the BBL team Melbourne Stars for, I don’t know, it might take about 15 years. And I look at things like, oh, they haven’t won anything, so it’s no big deal to pursue it. But for the players and people who have been with the club for so long, we don’t really see it that way.”
“So, yes, there’s a lot of history. Some great players have played for them. There’s Shane Warne, Kevin Pietersen, Luke Wright and some like Lasith Malinga. I understand things move on and things like that. But, yes, it’s a club that, for me, being an Australian cricketer, you want to play for Australia.”
Melbourne Stars veteran Marcus Stoinis is surprised by Cricket Victoria’s plans to merge its two franchises.
