Suthar also told about his debut on the morning of the match. One of the most surprising revelations in Suthar’s post-match conversation was that he only found out on the morning of the game that he would be making his Test debut. When asked when he came to know about his selection, Suthar said, “I found out in the morning when we reached the field.”
Despite receiving the news just hours before the start of the game, the spinner insisted he was mentally prepared for the occasion. His performance certainly suggested that nerves were never an issue, as he settled into the game immediately and bowled with remarkable composure.

Suthar attributed his success to sticking to a straightforward strategy rather than attempting anything extraordinary. Explaining his thought process during magic he said, “During the spell my focus was on bowling in the right areas and supporting my strengths. The wicket was helping, so my effort was to bowl in the right areas and hit the right lengths as consistently as possible.”
The spinner further revealed that the conditions suited his bowling style perfectly. That disciplined approach paid off immediately as he troubled the Afghan batsmen throughout his spell and emerged as one of India’s standout performers.
“There was some help from the wicket and my strength is to turn the ball. So my aim was to get as much turn as possible because the pitch was helping. Also, I wanted to bowl in good areas and bowl the ideal length consistently because that’s where the help was coming. That was my entire focus.” he explained.
From domestic cricket to Indian dressing room
Reflecting on his journey, Suthar spoke emotionally about achieving his dream of representing India.
“My journey started with domestic cricket, U-19 and then Ranji Trophy. It has been great and very special. It is everyone’s dream to play for India and I am extremely happy to get my cap.” Suthar revealed
The statement highlighted the years of hard work behind his success and the importance of earning a spot in the national team.
Shubman Gill’s guidance proves valuable
Suthar also acknowledged the role of captain Gill, with whom he has shared the dressing room in franchise cricket. The spinner believes that familiarity helped Gill give useful advice throughout the innings.
“Yes, possibly. Since we have played together, he understands my strengths and my bowling very well. Based on this, he guides me about field placements, match situations and what lines and lengths I should bowl.” Suthar further said.
