Liton Das calls Mohammad Rizwan ‘unprofessional’ for carelessness in shaking hands

Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das has publicly criticized Pakistan’s veteran Mohammad Rizwan for refusing to take part in the traditional post-match handshake ceremony. The Bangladesh star said the visiting team displayed exemplary sportsmanship, with Rizwan being the exception.

Bangladesh, led by Nazmul Hossain Shanto, completed a 2–0 home whitewash over Pakistan, led by Shan Masood, in the Test series in May 2026. The matches, played between 8 May and 20 May, were part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle and cemented Bangladesh’s dominance in the rivalry.

It doesn’t matter how big a player he is – Liton Das on Mohammad Rizwan’s handshake snub

In a recent interview with The Prothom Alo, Liton Das expressed his disappointment at Mohammad Rizwan’s conduct after the match. The Bangladesh wicketkeeper said that on-field rivalries should end after the match is over and also said that refusing to shake hands is against the spirit of the game.

Liton said, “No matter what happens on the field, after the end of the game everyone should shake hands. After the defeat in the first Test, Rizwan did not come to shake hands with us. No matter how big a player he is, this should not have happened.”

He said, “He did the same in the second Test also. He may have had a problem with me, but the entire Bangladesh team did not do anything to him.”

It was completely unprofessional on his part – Liton Das criticizes Mohammad Rizwan

Liton Das criticized Mohammad Rizwan’s behavior and said that the incident was limited to the Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman. He said that the rest of the players of the Pakistan team showed proper sportsmanship and participated in the handshake after the match.

“The entire Pakistan team shook hands with us. Only he (Rizwan) did not do that. It was completely unprofessional on his part.”

Bangladesh dominated the first Test in Dhaka, where fast bowler Nahid Rana took five wickets to help the hosts register their first Test win over Pakistan on home soil. Bangladesh scored 413 runs and declared their innings at 240/9, but bowled out Pakistan for just 163 runs in the final innings.

In the second Test in Sylhet, Bangladesh scored 278 and 390. Chasing 437, Rizwan (94) and Salman Ali Aga added 134 runs for a crucial partnership. However, Taijul Islam took six wickets, bowling out Pakistan for 358, giving Bangladesh a 2–0 series win.

Focus on your batting here – Heated exchange between Liton Das and Mohammad Rizwan

According to stump-mic recordings, tension between Liton Das and Mohammad Rizwan began during a heated exchange on the fourth day of the second Test. The incident occurred after Rizwan repeatedly raised concerns about activity near SiteScreen.

Linton: “What are you doing?”

Rizwan: “Look, look, he is standing there.”

Liton: “Why are you looking there? Focus on your batting here.”

Rizwan: “Is it your job, mine or the umpire’s?”

This exchange prompted umpires Richard Kettleborough and Allahuddin Palekar to intervene and defuse the situation. Tension continued later in the match as some Bangladesh fielders were seen targeting Rizwan, who was suffering from cramps, with verbal comments.
