Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed experienced wicketkeeper batsman Liton Das as its new ODI captain. The keeper-batsman replaces all-rounder Mehdi Hasan Miraz, who was previously the captain of the 50-over format. Liton Das has the experience of leading the Bangladesh national cricket team in the T20I format, and that will definitely help the experienced campaigner.
It is a good decision by BCB to have a captain for the white ball format. It becomes easier to manage the parties and the strategies do not change frequently. Liton Das would like to guide the team well in the 50-over format as the team has performed well in the shorter format under his captaincy.
Liton Das will be the captain of Bangladesh till 2027 World Cup
Liton Das will remain the captain of Bangla Tigers till the 2027 World Cup. This is a big opportunity for the wicketkeeper batsman to lead the team in a major event for the first time in his career. He has previously led the team in 7 matches in this format and has 3 wins, 3 losses and 1 no result with a win percentage of 42.85%.
Tauheed Hridoy will remain the vice-captain of the ODI team. Nazmul Hossain Shanto will remain the Test captain. The captaincy decision is surprising because recently Bangladesh has won consecutive home ODI series against Pakistan and Australia. Earlier Bangla Tigers had three captains for three formats.
Liton Das’s captaincy record
Das took over the ODI captaincy in the 2022 season due to injury to regular captain Tamim Iqbal. He led Bangladesh to a memorable 2–1 home series win against India, winning the first two close matches by 1 wicket and 5 runs and losing the third match. However, despite good results he only captained a few matches.
As a captain, he has scored 149 runs in 6 innings with a highest of 53 runs and a good average of 29.80. He would like to change his batting landscape by taking more responsibility as a leader and leading the team from the front with the bat.
“We should have two captains” – Tamim Iqbal on the policy of two captains in all formats
During the board of directors meeting, current BCB president Tamim Iqbal said that BCB wanted to have two captains for all three formats and he also had the same reason so he has chosen Liton Das for the leadership.
Speaking to the media, BCB President Tamim Iqbal said, “I believe that we should have two captains and the board also shares the same view.”
Under the leadership of Mehdi Hasan Miraj, the team performed well on home ground.
