Former India cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan backed Vaibhav Suryavanshi after his brief innings of 14 runs in his debut match for the India national cricket team.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest cricketer to represent Team India in men’s international cricket, breaking the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar, who announced his arrival in international cricket at the age of 16. Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his debut in Team India at the age of 15.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi got only 14 runs in his first match for India

Expectations were high from Vaibhav in IPL 2026 and after his recent performances with the India A cricket team in Sri Lanka. The celebrated debut ended in disappointment as he was out after scoring only 14 runs off 10 balls.

Suryavanshi has been included in the playing eleven in place of Sanju Samson, who is once again struggling with poor form. Should the Indian team management keep faith in Vaibhav Suryavanshi? This question has arisen after his short innings against England in Manchester.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan seeks support from Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan asked the Indian team management to keep supporting the young sensation in the ongoing India vs England T20 series and beyond, as the opening batsman can serve the team for a few decades. With the support of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer, the budding batsman can flourish for the Men in Blue.

“Once you decide to play him, you have to give him enough opportunities. Remember, he is an investment for the next 20 years. I think Vaibhav now needs a lot of support from Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer and the rest of the players. Even if he doesn’t perform well in some games, he should still be supported,” Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said via Sportstar.

Going one step further, the former cricketer said that for batting, Vaibhav Suryavanshi does not need the same fitness level as the bowlers. On the basis of just one innings, it seems pointless to rest the Bihar-born player.

“He (Suryavanshi) should be given enough chances in white-ball cricket and see how he performs. Meanwhile, there is no point in wasting a young player and giving him a break or giving him rest. He does not need rest.”

“He can play well throughout the year. Especially as a batsman, he doesn’t need the same fitness as a bowler. And batting for a long time will also give him the concentration, mental work that he can do for a long time,” he said.

Should Team India consider Vaibhav Suryavanshi for the 2027 ODI World Cup?

As the Indian team management prepares for the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027, Suryavanshi is now in the eyes of the 60-year-old as a serious contender to be included in the final squad for the showcase tournament. Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said that if a batsman performs well in T20Is, he should be eligible to play in the 50-over World Cup.

“If he performs very well in the T20 format then he should definitely get a chance in the upcoming 50-over World Cup. He should get a chance because he is going to be a match-winner. When he scores runs, he will be a match-winner in all formats of white-ball cricket,” Sivaramakrishnan said.
