Laura Cardoso enters the history books with magical 9-for

A record has been made in T20 International cricket, as for the first time since the inception of this format, a bowler has taken 9 wickets in a single innings of the match.

Brazil’s Laura Cardoso registered her name in the record books by taking 9 wickets in a single innings. Before Cardoso, there was no one, including men and women, who had taken 9 wickets in an innings of a T20I game.

Brazil women’s cricket team bowler Laura Cardoso took 9 wickets in an innings.

Brazil women’s cricket team cricketer Laura Cardoso achieved this feat against Lesotho in the BCA Kalahari Women’s T20 International tournament match in Gaborone. Lesotho’s batting line-up did a lot against the Brazilian cricket team losing their tenth batsman. In front of Brazil’s innings of 202 runs, the opposing team collapsed for just 13 runs in 6.2 overs.

Lesotho’s batsmen did not know how to deal with Laura Cardoso. At an official press conference, the International Press Conference reported that Cardoso registered her name as the first player to take nine wickets in a single innings in either men’s or women’s T20I cricket.

An all-time record including both men’s and women’s T20 International cricket

Before the Brazilian bowler, the record for taking most wickets in a T20I innings was in the name of Bhutan’s Sonam Yeshe. Whereas in women’s cricket, Indonesian player Rohmalia had created history a few years ago by taking 7 wickets against Mongolia.

“Cardoso delivered a sensational spell against Lesotho, finishing with exceptional figures of 9/4 from her three overs, the best bowling figures ever in T20I cricket. The previous best performance was held by Bhutan’s Sonam Yeshi, who took eight wickets for just seven runs against Myanmar in the men’s T20I in 2025. In the women’s T20I, Cardoso thrashed Indonesia’s Rohmalia “Rohmaliya surpassed the figures of 7/0 against Mongolia in 2024,” the ICC said in a press release.

Laura Cardoso took a hat-trick in the second over.

The official statement further added that Cardoso’s incredible spell began in the second over when the fast bowler took a hat-trick. After this, he took four more wickets in the fourth over and took his number of wickets to seven. Two additional wickets in the sixth over took him to an unprecedented nine wickets in an innings.

Marian Arthur took the remaining wicket of the innings and Brazil got a big win over Lesotho by 189 runs.

Cricket Brazil has shared a special post on Instagram to inform cricket fans about the world record.

The post read, “MVP… with a world record. Laura Cardoso not only dominated the game – she made cricket history. 9 wickets in a T20 match. Most dismissals in the world, an incredible performance, the kind you rarely see… And that is now Brazil’s name. 3 overs, 2 maidens, only 4 runs allowed. This is world class. This is historic. This is Brazil.”
