Legendary South African Batter AB de Villiers has exploded Vian Mulder to break away from a golden spot to break the world record of West Indies Great Brian Lara in Test cricket during the second Test against Zimbabwe in July 2025 in July 2025.
In the absence of Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj, Vian Mulder, captained by South Africa, was hovering unbeaten 367 with just 334 balls. The Protiaz all-rounder once had a lifetime opportunity that broke the record of 400 runs from Brian Lara in Test cricket.

Later, Vian explained that he wanted Lara’s record to remain with West Indian Legend, who had achieved the feat against England in 2004.
At the end of the day’s game, the Mulder told Sean Pollock, “I felt that we are enough with the new ball, and secondly, Brian Lara is a legend. He found 400 against England – for someone of that height, for someone, is very special to keep that record.”
He said, “I think if I get a chance again, I will probably do only one thing. Talking to Shukri (Shukri Conrad), he said to me, ‘Okay, listen, let the legends really score big’.

However, AB de Villiers was not influenced by the Calder’s call. The former South African captain reported that the Mulder had already taken legends like Kumar Sangakkara, Hashim Amla and many others to 367.
If the Radders actually believe in protecting the “records of legends”, what did he say about those names? The legendary batsman made it clear that the records are for breaking, and history does not care who the opponent is.
AB de Villiers said on the beard before the wicket podcast, “I think he should have (the record of broken Lara). I mean, I didn’t later agree with the comments where he was talking about legends to keep records records. But he passed many legends for the last 20 runs.
He is never going to get that opportunity: AB de Villiers
In addition, de Villiers said that the glitter could not get another such chance again. The platform was perfect, and the glitter should have gone to history.
