Former national team captain Kris Srikkanth believes that India lost the second and deciding match of the 2-match series against Ireland only because of a poor batting performance. The former batsman mentioned that if the middle-order batsmen, especially Tilak Verma, Axar Patel and Shivam Dubey, could have batted thoughtfully, the team would not have suffered a 1-run defeat, which also cost them the series.
Chris Srikkanth believes that both the batsmen, Tilak Verma and Axar Patel, did not show the required intent to rotate the run rate in a significant manner. Criticizing Tilak, Srikkanth claims that the batsman’s intention was to take the innings to the end, and he walked off the field as the team’s hero. Whatever the plan, it didn’t really work and India were all out for 154 runs as against Ireland’s 155 runs.
Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel, “You can’t play the way India played in the middle phase, especially Tilak Verma, Dubey and Axar. All their strike rates were bad. You have to settle down a bit and then start attacking in the middle phase. Otherwise, if you fail in the middle phase you will be eliminated. India lost the game in the middle phase. Tilak Verma was just hiding in one and two and playing for himself. Axar Patel was the same.”
He said, “Tilak Verma tried to take it till the end and be the hero. He thought about winning it in the end and celebrating by raising his jersey. These targets have to be achieved with an over to spare and not go till the end.”
