West Indies great all-rounder Andre Russell took the biggest decision of his cricket career last month, ending his IPL journey as a player and stepping into a new role as the power coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The news surprised many fans, but what was even more impressive was how honestly Andre Russell talked about what he was going through. The West Indian became quite uncomfortable after seeing his edited pictures in other teams’ jerseys, as KKR had already made up their mind to release him.
Andre Russell retires as a player and becomes KKR power coach ahead of IPL 2026
The thought of wearing anything other than KKR’s purple and gold continued to bother him so much that he even struggled to sleep some nights. And finally he decided to end his IPL career with the franchise.
Russell, while announcing his new role as KKR’s power coach, said, “When you’re going through social media, you keep seeing yourself photoshopped into different jerseys (of other teams). It felt weird to see myself in any color other than purple and gold, and those thoughts kept running through my mind, causing me to have some sleepless nights.”

For more than a decade, Andre Russell was one of the biggest match-winners for Kolkata Knight Riders. He hit big sixes, bowled dangerous spells and single-handedly changed the course of the match. And even the three-time IPL champion supported him through ups and downs and helped him with his fitness.
Apart from the IPL, KKR also included the former West Indies captain in its global teams such as Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the International League T20, Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League and LA Knight Riders in America’s Major League Cricket.
Releasing Andre Russell was part of KKR’s bigger plan
Hence, many believed that Andre Russell would retire only in KKR colours, and he did. But the big question was that when the connection was unbroken then why did KKR release him before the IPL 2026 auction? Well, according to Cricbuzz, the decision was based on the planning, strategy, timing and the bigger picture of the IPL 2026 auction.
Russell’s performance last season was not as per expectations. He scored 167 runs in 13 matches and took eight wickets. These figures were disappointing. But this was not the main reason behind the release. This was part of KKR’s bigger plan being made in the background.
The decisions of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also influenced the franchise to take this drastic step. There were rumors that CSK was preparing to release Mathisha Pathirana, who was a high-value player at Rs 13 crore. And he did this at the last moment.
That move will fetch CSK a huge sum in the auction. If they enter with more than Rs 40 crore, they will be in a very strong position. To remain competitive, Kolkata-based franchises will have to think smart. If they had kept Russell, their purse would have been much smaller.

KKR release Andre Russell to make mega purse!!
Hence, they released the West Indies all-rounder to get big money in the auction. With Russell’s departure, KKR’s purse increased to Rs 64.30 crore, putting them in the strongest financial position ahead of the auction. Big purse means control. This means you can chase any top player, increase the pressure on rivals, and even decide how expensive the biggest names of the auction will be.
KKR can now target high-demand players like Australia’s Cameron Green or England’s Jamie Smith, or even go for both if they fit into the team’s plans. Another important factor was Russell’s actual cost. While his listed IPL fee was Rs 12 crore, the actual cut for KKR was Rs 18 crore as they were retained in the top pay bracket last season.
For a team trying to build a new team, this was overwhelming. Had the cut remained at Rs 12 crore, there was a strong possibility that they would not have released the former World Cup winner for another season. And the last reason was timing.
Andre Russell gets coaching role just before auction registration deadline
The last date for registration of players was approaching. Andre Russell needed clarity. If KKR had not offered him something soon, he would have had to register for the auction. This could have led to him being picked up by another team which he obviously did not want.
So KKR immediately offered him the role of power coach. This was the perfect solution. He did not need to participate in the auction. He did not need to wear another jersey. He can continue with the same franchise, just in a new role, and their partnership will also continue.
