Joe Root’s words reflect the impressive record of Sachin Tendulkar and the scale of his great cricket career. However, he showed humility despite coming close to breaking Sachin’s once seemingly unbreakable record.
England have evolved their batting approach in recent times under their coach Brendon McCullum, who believes in a more aggressive approach even in the longest format of the game. However, one batsman who stuck to a more technical approach was Joe Root, the most famous Test cricketer of this generation.
Joe Root is a cricketer who is continuously making records in his Test career and has achieved immense success. He is currently the second-highest run-scorer in Test history and is close to the mammoth record set by former Indian star Sachin Tendulkar.
Joe Root pays tribute to Sachin Tendulkar’s immense legacy in world cricket.
During a recent interview with The Athletic, Joe Root praised Sachin Tendulkar by pointing out his longevity in the game of cricket. He reflected on the fact that the question he has been asked most often in recent times is about the Indian legend’s record chase.
He said, “Well, I get asked this so often now that I couldn’t ignore it even if I tried.”
Root claimed that Sachin was a star for India and had made his debut even before Root was born and played in Root’s first match against India. This was a reflection of the fact that Tendulkar’s legacy transcends generations.
“It’s remarkable what Sachin Tendulkar achieved in the game. You have to believe me when I say that even interacting with him is enough for me. The guy made his Test debut before I was born, and played in my Test debut! His longevity is remarkable in itself, and then you look at the runs he has scored in Test cricket… but not only that, he has also scored 50 ODI centuries,” said the English cricketer.
“The most famous man in India”: Joe Root reflects on Sachin Tendulkar’s career
Currently, Root is at the second position with 13943 runs and is only behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 15921 Test runs. On a record that once seemed unbreakable, Root is inching closer to becoming a memorable name in the history of world cricket.
Joe Root then praised the former Indian great for becoming an icon for global cricket over a long period from 1989, his debut year, to 2013, his retirement. He was not only scoring runs but also working successfully under unimaginable pressure due to his stardom.
Root acknowledged this, saying, “At all times, he was the most famous person in India. Serious, serious player.” However, Root’s humility demonstrates why he is often regarded as one of the greatest players of this generation and one of the best of the decade.
Joe Root has set high standards of discipline for future cricketers
Joe Root is not among other modern cricketers who are based on aggression or theatrics, rather he has built his career citing consistency and great determination to improve.
At the peak of his career before his final stint, Root reflects on his approach of always having a good technical approach to the game and the hard work he puts in to maintain such high standards. Speaking on his current form, Root said, “I always try to improve my batting and add things.”
He said, “To make sure I feel as compact and technically strong as possible, so that when the real games come, I can think tactically and play what is right in front of me, rather than worrying about technical things or anything else. It sounds very simple, but when I am at the crease, I just want to play the game.”
