Joe Root has given a big statement on the fame of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni

Cricket has always created superstars, but very few reach that level where lives are completely changed. Players like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are no longer just cricketers, but they are global icons. The fame of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni is so widespread that even a simple walk becomes a challenge for them.

The former Indian captain cannot roam in a park or go to a restaurant without his security and even at airports he brings his security to drop him off. For Indian superstars, living a normal life is beyond their imagination.

Joe Root’s honest opinion on Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni’s fame

This public scrutiny forced Virat Kohli to temporarily shift his home to London for his children to live a normal life without camera flashes. Now, England’s modern era legend Joe Root has made a big and honest comment regarding the stardom of Kohli and Dhoni.

While many people dream of such popularity, Root made it clear that this level of fame comes at a heavy price to pay, and it is not something he personally wants in his life. Root shared that he started playing because he loved sports just like any other kid.

Even today, he enjoys simple things like watching local matches or spending time around the grounds, which remind him of his childhood days.

I don’t play cricket for fame: Joe Root

Joe Root said on the Wisden Cricket Podcast: “I don’t play cricket for the fame, obviously, but it’s a result. And I think that’s the right word in my eyes. It’s not an add-on. I still love coming here and watching my mates play on a Saturday or watching kids running around and playing on the outfield, which is what I did as a kid. And that’s why I got into it and how I got into it.”

However, the former England Test player feels that Kohli and Dhoni’s life is very different and more difficult than his, as there is tight security, huge crowds and constant attention from fans and media wherever they go. Root considers himself fortunate that he can still enjoy a normal lifestyle.

Joe Root considers himself “lucky” not to have a life like MS Dhoni-Virat Kohli

He added, “I would never want there to be a case where I wasn’t able to do it anymore or they didn’t feel like they could do it too. So, I look at some of the superstars in India, and I don’t envy them at all, and I think their lifestyle would be really difficult and very difficult for them. So, in many ways, I feel very fortunate. I played paddle this morning and went for a bike ride in the Peak District. And you think MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli can’t.

When the right-handed batsman was reminded how Dhoni still rides his Ducati or his luxury car in Ranchi, he mentioned that it would not be a peaceful experience. And Root feels lucky to be able to spend time outside without being surrounded by people all the time.

The Englishman concluded by saying, “Maybe, but there might be 25 other people around him. And, you know, he’s not going to be able to do that in peace and quiet. And yes, I feel very fortunate in that regard.”
