Jitesh Sharma talks about his relationship with Sanju Samson after taking over the wicketkeeping duties for India in the opening T20 match against South Africa. The RCB wicketkeeper-batsman described Samson as a “big brother” in his cricketing journey despite being older than the Kerala cricketer.

Samson was pushed to the middle-order position after Shubman Gill returned to the top order. After his disappointing performance, the team backed Jitesh Sharma considering his natural finisher role. Jitesh has become India’s preferred wicketkeeper-batsman in the recent T20Is, including the opening matches.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Jitesh Sharma opened up about the relationship between him and Sanju Samson. The RCB batsman said that they compete for the same role. He described Samson as like an elder brother, whose presence inspires him to perform at his best.

“I’m very grateful he’s on the team. To be honest, he’s like a big brother. Having healthy competition brings out your talent. It’s good for the team too. There’s a lot of talent. You can feel it,” he said (quoted by RevSportz).

He said, “Sanju bhaiya is a great player. I have to compete with him, only then I have to give my best. We both are trying to play for India. We are like brothers. We share a lot of experience with each other. He helps me a lot.”

Jitesh Sharma calling Sanju Samson his “elder brother” is more of an honor than age. Sharma is 32 years old and older than Samson, but experience matters more in cricket.

Samson has been a part of the Indian team since 2015 and has played many international matches. Jitesh, on the other hand, only made his debut for India in 2023. Samson is seen as the senior player in the group.

Jitesh’s comment shows his appreciation for Samson’s journey and the guidance he received from him. He has been India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman since the third T20 match during the recent Australia tour.

India has taken a 1-0 lead in the series by defeating South Africa by 101 runs.

Talking about the match, India won by 101 runs on Tuesday, December 9 in Cuttack. After being invited to bat first, they reached 175 for 6. Hardik Pandya scored unbeaten 59 runs in 28 balls, which included five fours and four sixes.

Tilak Verma and Axar Patel also added useful runs. Lungi Ngidi took three wickets for South Africa. South Africa was all out for just 74 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakraborty and Axar Patel took two wickets each, while Hardik and Shivam Dubey took one wicket each.

Hardik collected the Player of the Match award as India went 1–0 up in the five-match series. Jitesh Sharma also made a small contribution of 10 runs in 5 balls, which also included a six.
