The situation with the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has now become critical and all focus is on International Cricket Council President Jay Shah as Bangladesh continues to refuse to play its matches in India. While many were expecting a public reaction, Jay Shah has remained completely silent in front of the media and is handling the matter quietly but firmly.
Jay Shah calls an emergency meeting on ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as Bangladesh looks to move against Sri Lanka
With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 just a few weeks away, a major schedule crisis has prompted Jay Shah to call an emergency meeting with top BCCI officials in Vadodara on Sunday (January 11).
The ICC President called an urgent meeting after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) formally and repeatedly requested to shift its entire T20 World Cup group stage matches from India to co-host Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.

To deal with the growing problem, Shah will sit with top BCCI officials in Vadodara on Sunday, where the first ODI between India and New Zealand will be played on the same day, NDTV reported. The ICC chairman is already in the city as the special guest of the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA).
Origin of the dispute: Bangladesh’s firm stand
The whole drama started after KKR suddenly dropped Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 on the orders of BCCI after violence against Hindu minorities intensified in Bangladesh. First, Bangladesh banned IPL indefinitely in the country and then demanded the T20 World Cup matches to be held in Sri Lanka.
Now the request of Bangladesh Cricket Board gradually turned into a sensitive and tense issue. In its first message to the ICC, the BCB asked to shift its ICC T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India. Sri Lanka was suggested as an alternative venue. In the second letter sent to ICC, BCB has made the situation even more serious.
He demanded personal security for every member of his World Cup group if the trip to India cannot be avoided. This included players, coaches, support staff and officials. BCB made it clear that now the matter is not only about security but also about respect and dignity.

No answers, no changes: BCB quips as ICC silence continues
Recently, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Aminul Islam Bulbul had said that the board has not yet received any response from the ICC. He confirmed that Bangladesh has already sent all the documents and supporting material explaining its concerns, but there has been no response yet.
“We have not received any response from the ICC yet. We have sent all the attachments and evidence of our concern. At the end of the day any alternate Indian venue is an Indian venue. You all know that no unilateral decision can be taken, and we have to follow the government’s order. We stand where we were a few days ago,” Bulbul was quoted as saying by News 18.
As per the current schedule, Bangladesh has to play three group matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. There have been reports that Hyderabad and Chennai are being considered as replacement venues, but the BCB president said he had no information about this and it would not change his stance.
The BCB boss further said, “I cannot comment on what we will do if we are not allowed to play in Sri Lanka until the ICC sends its response. I have not heard about Hyderabad and Chennai being replacement venues. We may know on Monday or Tuesday.”
