Team India’s fast bowling leader Jasprit Bumrah led his team to success on the first day of the second Test (Saturday, November 22) against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Just before the break, Bumrah ended the partnership between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton.
The right-arm fast bowler troubled South Africa with his tight bowling during the first spell. Bumrah took an edge off Markram’s bat, but KL Rahul dropped the catch straight away. However, he ended the session by dismissing the right-handed batsman in the final over of the first session on the opening day.
WATCH: Jasprit Bumrah knocks down Aiden Markram’s stumps just before tea
Jasprit Bumrah gave India the important breakthrough just before the tea interval in Guwahati. Bumrah was brought on for a short period, and he promptly uprooted Aiden Markram’s stumps, ending the 82-run opening partnership that had left the hosts frustrated.
Markram attempted an ambitious drive on a fuller delivery outside off, but with limited footwork, he got a thick inside edge which crashed into middle stump. The dismissal sparked massive celebration among the Indian supporters, while KL Rahul, who had dismissed Markram for 4, was visibly relieved.
Bumrah’s ability to change the game in a single over justified Rishabh Pant’s decision to recall him moments before the break. The wicket provided a lot of relief to India in a crucial match to keep the Test series alive.

Aiden Markram was dismissed for 4 runs by KL Rahul on the ball of Jasprit Bumrah.
Temba Bavuma’s decision to bat first quickly paid off. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton handled the initial attack from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj without any panic. Indian fast bowlers did not get initial success with the new ball.
India had a chance to make a break when Bumrah got an edge off Markram’s ball, but KL Rahul dropped the catch at slip. The Proteas batsmen adjusted well to the conditions and the Indian attack, rotating the strike and attacking the loose balls.
Rishabh Pant made a last-ditch attempt to break the stand before tea, and brought back Jasprit Bumrah for a brief spell. On the fifth ball of the 27th over, Bumrah bowled Markram for 38 runs. South Africa reached intermission at 82 for 1, still in a good position despite the late fall of wickets.
India without Shubman Gill for second Test against South Africa
India will be without Shubman Gill in the crucial second Test against South Africa as he failed to recover from the neck strain suffered during the opening match. Rishabh Pant is leading the national cricket team in Guwahati.
Gill was injured early in the first Test at Eden Gardens. The batsman was out after facing just three balls. He was taken to a hospital in Kolkata for treatment and did not return to bat in the second innings. India collapsed while chasing a modest target of 124 runs and lost by 30 runs.
Gill was discharged immediately after the match and went to Guwahati with the team. However, the BCCI confirmed that he will have to undergo further medical assessment in Mumbai. There is also uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming ODI series against the same opponent.
