Team India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was disappointed at the LBW appeal against South African captain Temba Bavuma during the first Test of the two-match series. The incident went viral after it happened during South Africa’s first innings on the opening day (Friday, November 14) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

In the opening match of the series, the visiting team won the toss and decided to bat first. Openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton gave a positive start, adding more than 50 runs for the first wicket. However, Bumrah turned the momentum in favor of the home team by dismissing both well-set openers in quick succession.

During the 13th over of South Africa’s first innings, Jasprit Bumrah hit Temba Bavuma on the back pad with a sharp in-swinger. Bumrah immediately appealed for LBW, but umpire Rod Tucker turned it down.

Although Bumrah was confident, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant felt that the ball had bounced too much, leading to captain Shubman Gill abandoning the review after a long discussion.

Rishabh: How high is it?

Bumra: He is also a dwarf.

Jadeja: What is your height?

Bumrah: This sister-fucker is a dwarf.

Replays later confirmed that the ball would have gone over the leg stump. Bumrah took two wickets for nine runs including four maidens in his first spell of seven overs.

Temba Bavuma was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for 3 runs.

Temba Bavuma, who led South Africa to the World Test Championship title earlier this year, returned to the playing eleven for the Test series against India after missing the Pakistan tour due to injury. However, his comeback got off to a disappointing start in the first innings at Eden Gardens.

Bavuma scored only 3 runs off 11 balls and was out to Kuldeep Yadav, caught by Dhruv Jurel at leg slip. Due to the fall of his wicket, South Africa was struggling at 71 runs for 3 wickets in the 16th over. After a long leave due to injury, the captain will now be under pressure to play a big innings in the second innings.

Sai Sudarshan out of India’s playing eleven for the first test

Questions have been raised on the decision to keep Sai Sudarshan out of India’s playing eleven. The management opted to experiment with Washington Sundar, while Karun Nair had already been dropped after poor performances in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England.

Sudarshan gave modest returns in India A’s two practice matches against South Africa A, scoring 32, 12, 17 and 23. However, he performed well in the previous Test series against West Indies with scores of 87 and 39.

The 24-year-old has scored 273 runs in nine Test innings at an average of 30.33, which includes two fifties. In first-class cricket, he has scored 2,562 runs in 38 matches at an average of 39.41, including eight centuries and nine half-centuries.
